Scientist Dr Jason Braithwaite at Muncaster Castle has put another nail in the coffin of ghosts. The researcher has published a report on his long-term investigation into unexplained happenings at Muncaster and claims that they are due more to strange magnetic fields than the spirits of the castle’s former inhabitants. Dr Braithwaite carried out a number of tests around the bed in the haunted Tapestry Room shortly before Halloween last year.“These tests revealed that there is a strong and severe deflection in the earth’s magnetic field around the bed. So much sothat a magnetic compass is pulled away from north by over 90 degrees.
The anomaly can still be detected up to two metres away from the bed.”
His findings are published this week in the European Journal of Parapsychology. It is written in conjunction with Maurice Townsend, of the Association for the Scientific Study of Anomalous Phenomena.Dr Braithwaite concludes: “We know from previous laboratory research that complex magnetic fields can cause some people to interpret sensations and events, that they cannot immediately explain, as paranormal activity.“These fields may also induce more elaborate forms of sensory hallucination ranging from the feeling of a ‘sensed presence’ to seeing a fully-formed apparition.”He adds:“We haven’t yet managed to prove conclusively that ghosts don’t exist. However, we are increasingly able to show that there is a rational reason for what many report as ‘ghostly sightings’.However such attempts to dismiss ghosts are obviously not persuading everyone. Peter Frost Pennington, whose family owns the castle, reports there is still a waiting list for people who want to spend the night in the Tapestry Room.He said: “People come from all over the world to stay in the room.“Every year we get fresh reports of unusual phenomenon for which there is apparently no rational explanation”.Article Source
