The Sahara was home to sizable communities up to 10,000 years ago, but what happened to them ?Paleolithic rock art discovered in regions of the Sahara desert are now all that"s left of what were once sophisticated human settlements which over the centuries developed clay pottery, rode horses and eked out a living in what is now the world"s largest desert. But who were these ancient people, howdid they survive there and where did they go ?Archaeologist Stefan Kröpelin ventured in to the Sahara in the hopes of finding the answers.

What he discovered was that the Sahara was not always as it is today - thousands of years ago it was a lush savannah covered in grassland and lakes, the perfect place for early humans to settle. As time went on however the region dried up, forcing its ancient inhabitants back towards the Nile. "TheSahara in central Africa is the largest hot desert on Earth, its blistering sands practically lifeless."

A rocky hilltop discovered in South Africa is believed to be an ancient shaman rainmaking ritual site.At an elevation of 1000ft, the hilltop site of Ratho Kroonkop near the borders of Botswana and Zimbabwe is believed to have been used by shaman hundreds of years ago to perform rituals intended to make it rain. Scientists working at the site have discovered the remains of up to 30,000 different animals there includingthose of a zebra, a rhinoceros and a giraffe."What makes RKK special is that every piece of faunal material found at RKK can in some way be linked to rain control," said researcher Simone Brunton.

"The shaman or ritual specialist was usually the only one directly involved with the actual doing of the rituals. It would have been strictly forbidden for normal folks to go near the site." "Located in a semiarid area of the country, near Botswana and Zimbabwe, the siteof Ratho Kroonkop (RKK) sits atop a 1,000-foot-tall (300 meters) hill and contains two naturally formed "rock tanks."

Two elderly women were poisoned after being accused of using goblins to harm local children. The bizarre series of events took place in the village of Mangisi where 83-year-old Jersey Mutero and 73-year-old Erita Bhebhe were blamed for a child falling ill. Shaman Maxwell Pira was called upon to perform a cleansing ceremony because it was believed the women had been summoning goblins to inflict harm on the child.During the ceremony the two women were given "holy water" to drink which turned out to be lethal poison."The two elderly women drank the liquid but collapsed almost immediately," said Midlands police chief, Inspector Emmanuel Mahako.

"They were put on a scotch cart but died on the way to hospital." Pira is now on the run from the authorities who want him in connection with the women"s deaths. A closely clustered group of pyramids and a number of graves have been found at a site called Sedeinga. The discovery is unusual due to the way that the pyramids are densely concentrated within a small area, in one instance researchers found 13 of them packed in to an area the size of an NBA basketball court. It is believed that these pyramids date back 2,000 years to a time when Sudan was home toa kingdom known as Kush which shared borders with Egypt and the Roman Empire.

The Egyptian pyramids are likely to have been an influence in their construction."The density of the pyramids is huge," said researcher Vincent Francigny. "Because it lasted for hundreds of years they built more, more, more pyramids and after centuries they started to fill all the spaces that were still available in the necropolis." At least 35 small pyramids, along with graves, have been discovered clustered closely together at a site called Sedeinga in Sudan.
