Dr. Sam Parnia has taken a closer look at how someone can be revived up to several hours after death. The key is in determining at what point the patient is actually dead and at what point it becomes impossible to revive them. It is now believed that the brain cells remain viable for as long as eight hours after a person is otherwise declared clinically deceased, but finding a reliable way to resuscitate someone within thistime frame remains a problem that science has yet to solve."We now understand that its only after a person has turned into a corpse that their cells are undergoing death, and if we therefore manipulate those processes, we can restart the heart and bring a person back to life," said Parnia.

Dr. Sam Parnia, a critical care doctor and the director of resuscitation research at Stony Brook University School of Medicine, has written a new book discussing ways in whichpeople can be resuscitated after they previously would have been considered clinically dead.

Neanderthal seafarers may have ventured to the Mediterranean islands more than 12,000 years ago.Up until now it was believed that the first people to reach the islands of the Mediterranean were Stone Age farmers and shepherds, but new archaeological finds suggest that the islands may have been visited before this. Obsidian from the Aegean island of Melos discovered on the mainland for example hasbeen found dating back 11,000 years while artifacts found on Cyprus date back even further."We found evidence that human hunters may have helped drive pygmy hippos to extinction on Cyprus about 12,000 years ago," said archaeologist Alan Simmons.

"There"s still a lot to find in archaeology - you have to keep pushing the envelope in terms of conventional wisdom." Neanderthals and other extinct human lineages might have been ancient mariners, venturing to the Mediterranean islands thousands of years earlier than previously thought.

A Harvard-educated neurosurgeon had a change of heart after he had his own near-death experience.Dr Eben Alexander had previously dismissed the idea of there being an afterlife until he slipped in to a coma in 2008 after contracting meningitis. What followed was an experience that would change his outlook forever and turn him from a skeptic in to a believer. He described it as "something so profound that it gave me a scientific reason to believe inconsciousness after death." During the coma he remembered meeting a beautiful woman with blue eyes in an environment filled with clouds and "shimmering beings"."A huge and booming like a glorious chant, came down from above, and I wondered if the winged beings were producing it," he added.

"The sound was palpable and almost material, like a rain that you can feel on your skin but doesn"t get you wet." Dr Alexander says he had heard stories from patients who spoke of outer body experiences buthad disregarded them as "wishful thinking" but has reconsidered his opinion following his own experience.

Professor John Martin Fischer will be heading a research initiative called "The Immortality Project".Fischer"s work will involve investigating topics such as heaven, hell, near-death experiences, karma and many more in an effort to determine if there is any evidence of life after death. The grant for the research comes from the John Templeton Foundation and is the largest ever awarded to a humanities professor at the Universityof California, Riverside."We will be very careful in documenting near-death experiences and other phenomena, trying to figure out if these offer plausible glimpses of an afterlife or are biologically induced illusions," said Fischer.

"Our approach will be uncompromisingly scientifically rigorous. Were not going to spend money to study alien-abduction reports." Fischer also said there is a "deep human need to figure out what happens to us after death" and that there havebeen many reports of near-death experiences, out-of-body experiences and past lives.
