Its one of the most enduring questions of all time - just what does happen when we die ?In ABC"s "Beyond Belief: Near Death Experiences" survivors who have had a close encounter with death share what they saw. Houston therapist Mary Jo Rapini described a pinkish glow and heard God tell her to go back after suffering a brain aneurysm in 2003. News anchor Bob Woodruff wasin Iraq when his vehicle hit a bomb, he says he saw his body floating below him and a bright white light.

An increasing number of near death experiences, or NDEs, are being reported thanks to advances in medical science and increased resuscitations of the dead. And several survivors have come forward to share their glimpses of what they believe is a realm beyond this life.

So, it turns out that world-famous British physicist Stephen Hawking doesn't believe in a "Heaven" or an afterlife. When we die, our brains shut down and then... nothing. Death, according to Hawking, is even more of a drag than we thought. No pearly gates, no rebirth, no playing harps on cloud tops. These stories of stuff that happens after death are just that; they're "fairy tales," Hawking told the UK's Guardian in a recent interview. But is this opinion really such a surprise? In September last year, I playfully branded Hawking a "troublemaker" after he published his book The Grand Design. In it, he cut "God" out of the universal creation equation. "Because there is a law such as gravity, the Universe can and will create itself from nothing. Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the Universe exists, why we exist," he wrote. In this new interview, Hawking drove home his trouble-making ways, saying, "I regard the brain as a computer which will stop working when its components fail. There is no heaven or afterlife for broken down computers; that is a fairy story for people afraid of the dark."

Evidence for a likely 50,000-year-old Neanderthal burial ground that includes the remains of at least three individuals has been unearthed in Spain, according to a Quaternary International paper. The deceased appear to have been intentionally buried, with each Neanderthal's arms folded such that the hands were close to the head. Remains of other Neanderthals have been found in this position, suggesting that it held meaning. Neanderthals therefore may have conducted burials and possessed symbolic thought before modern humans had these abilities. The site, Sima de las Palomas in Murcia, Southeast Spain, may also be the first known Neanderthal burial ground of Mediterranean Europe. "We cannot say much (about the skeletons) except that we surmise the site was regarded as somehow relevant in regard to the remains of deceased Neanderthals," lead author Michael Walker told Discovery News. "Their tools and food remains, not to mention signs of fires having been lit, which we have excavated indicate they visited the site more than once."

Burial ground believed to contain Neanderthal remains sheds light on their burial customs. While it"s often believed that Neanderthals were incapable of complex symbolic thought, scientists believe that remains discovered in Southeast Spain shed new light on their abilities -individuals found grouped together suggest possible ritualistic burial.
