I listened patiently as the UFO enthusiast explained how humans were transplanted to the earth from another world by our alien forebears. "Then how do you explain the fact that humans share 98% of our DNA with chimpanzees, and a genetic code will all life on earth?" I asked. "Well, I think you have to keep an open mind," was her starry-eyed response. People who believe odd things--that coffee enemas can cure cancer, that the Loch Ness Monster exists, that art on the dollar bill can explain secret conspiracies--are always telling us to "keep an open mind." To that, I reply: "Keep an open mind, sure--but notso open that your brains fall out." In the endless sparring between skeptics and believers, the "keep an open mind" rejoinder is the favorite weapon in the believers' arsenal.

It is their all-purpose tool. But what does it really mean to be open-minded, and is it the skeptics or the believers who are truly closed-minded? Having an open mind is a curious virtue: Everyone agrees that open-mindedness is indeed a virtuous state, but it's most often praised by those being decidedly closed-minded. Also, the most open-minded people are those whom you would least suspect as paragons of this particular virtue, skeptics. And those most lacking open-mindedness are those most likely to admonish others for not being so--truebelievers. Let me explain. Having an open mind means you don't dismiss claims to truth out of hand. You analyze first. When you analyze a claim, you consider all the relevant evidence and examine all the logic involved, in a fair and unbiased manner, then grant tentative acceptance or rejection. If new arguments or new evidence come up, then you revise your opinion. Being open means that you apply this standard fairly to all claims. Being open-minded does not mean believing every claim, no matter how improbable--that's being gullible, not open. This process of fair analysis, based upon logic and evidence, leading to tentative conclusions, which are open to revision, is part of science. It is also the very soul of trueopen-mindedness. ...

Four local children tell a tale of seeing a rotating disc flying across their subdivision and over a nearby cornfield before the object disappeared somewhere around Route 53. The children tell their story so well that expert investigators from the Mutual UFO Network say their story could not be made up. Investigators from the network, those who report witnessing unidentified flying objects and members of the public attended a special meeting Saturday at the Wilmington Public Library. The group provided videotapes and hundreds of photographs taken during what the UFO network's Illinois Section director, Sam Maranto, is calling someof the most massive area UFO sightings in recent history.

Two of the events took place Aug. 21 and Oct. 31 of this year and were reportedly seen by hundreds of people in Frankfort, Mokena, New Lenox, Tinley Park, Oak Forest, Orland Park, Orland Hills, Matteson and possibly as far away as Hazel Crest. The sighting reported by the children happened in Wilmington in June and differs from the more recent events. The more massive sightings were of a peculiar formation of three red lights not a disc that were seen by hundreds of witnesses. One business owner said he was sitting outside with some friends after the Chicago Bears football game when a neighbor yelled at them to look up. They watched the three lights change formationsas they went from a northwest direction to the southeast in about 20 minutes, he said. There reportedly was no sound. He said the bright red lights turned white before disappearing. Around 45 minutes later, a single red light appeared. He was able to capture the light with his video camera. The witness, who lives in Tinley Park, also viewed the return of the lights on Halloween night. There were three of them again, he said. There is a video of the sightings available at the National UFO Reporting Center Web site, at www.nuforc.org.The reporting center takes the reports, and the Mutual UFO Network does the actual investigations.Maranto said the UFO incidents are investigated by individuals certified in aviation, meteorology, physics,....

David Jacobs told an audience of about 30 last night that he knew his ideas sounded crazy. The Temple University associate history professor said his colleagues at Temple don't appreciate his research and he probably wouldn't have a job if he didn't have tenure. But his 40 years of research has led him to a truth, he said: Alien beings are abducting humans and reproducing with them to create hybrids, and the hybrids look human and can pass among us. "This is in the realm of Hollywood movies, of science fiction," he said. "I fully understand how crazy it sounds." Jacobs was speaking last night to ameeting of S.E.A.R.C.H., short for Science Evaluating Anomalies Research Center of Harrisburg.

Most in the audience were receptive and chuckled when Jacobs described the ridicule he sometimes faces. He used pictures his subjects drew of aliens to illustrate his lecture. Jacobs said he has hypnotized nearly 140 people, some many times, and many tell similar stories of alien abductions. Most don't recall the abductions without hypnosis because the aliens control their minds and make them forget. Under hypnosis, most people describe entering a spaceship manned by small, gray aliens with large, black eyes. They describe rooms with fetuses growing in jars. Others say they enter rooms filled with children, some of them lookingalien and others looking almost human. The children are usually wearing one-piece garments, and they play with toys, including a kind of skinny doll. They are very interested in plants and animals, and sometimes ask the abductees questions about life on Earth. Sometimes they ask if they look human, and if the answer is yes, they say, "Isn't it wonderful? Soon we'll all be together." The hybrids can communicate telepathically and render adults passive through mind control, he said. Jacobs said he does not yet know why the aliens are breeding hybrids. "I think it is an integration program," he said. "Hybrids will be among us for reasons we do not know, understand or probably want." Skepticsprovide. ...

The two men didn't want their names used for fear of ridicule, but they had a story to tell. It haunts their dreams and has forever changed the way they look into the night sky, said the men, who came, as did about two dozen others, to the first conference of the Alberta UFO Study Group on Saturday afternoon.Around 2 a.m. on April 29, 1997, the two men were driving between Valleyview and Grande Prairie when a bright red light approached them from above, one of the menrecalled. The wind around them picked up, they fell unconscious, and awoke in a space ship, he said.

"I remember I was fighting them and I kicked one between the legs, but they didn't have no testicles," one of the men said.He said he looked at his friend, who had some sort of golden apparatus in his mouth."Then they probed me," he said, with tears beginning to well in his eyes."I remember it as clear as yesterday."He said he blacked out and when he regained consciousness he was back in his car, speeding down the same highway in the wrong direction. It tookthem more than six hours to make a 45-minute trip.Physically, the former bull rider said he felt as sore as if he'd competed in a rodeo the night before."I was quiet for two or three weeks, then I started to remember it," he said. "I still have dreams."
