Submitted by Da Verminator: When last we saw the lost Ark of the Covenant in action, it had been dug up by Indiana Jones in Egypt and ark-napped by Nazis, whom the Ark proceeded to incinerate amidst a tempest of terrifying apparitions. But according to Tudor Parfitt, a real life scholar-adventurer, Raiders of the Lost Ark had it wrong, and the Ark is actually nowhere near Egypt. In fact, Parfitt claims he has traced it (or a replacement container for the original Ark), to a dusty bottom shelf in a museum in Harare, Zimbabwe. As Indiana Jones"s creators understood, the Ark is one of the Bible"s holiest objects, and also one of itsmost maddening McGuffins.

A wooden box, roughly 4 ft. x 2 ft. x 2.5 ft., perhaps gold-plated and carried on poles inserted into rings, it appears in the Good Book variously as the container for the Ten Commandments (Exodus 25:16: "and thou shalt put into the ark the testimony which I shall give thee"); the very locus of God"s earthly presence; and as a divine flamethrower that burns obstacles and also crisps some careless Israelites. It is too holy to be placed on the ground or touched by any but the elect. It circles Jericho behind the trumpets to bring the walls tumbling down. The Bible last places the Ark in Solomon"s temple, which Babylonians destroyed in 586 BC. Scholars debate its current locale (if any): under the Sphinx? BeneathJerusalem"s Temple Mount (or, to Muslims, the Noble Sanctuary)? In France? Near London"s Temple tube station? Parfitt, 63, is a professor at the University of London"s prestigious School of Oriental and African Studies. His new book, The Lost Ark of the Covenant: Solving the 2,500 Year Mystery of the Fabled Biblical Ark (HarperOne) along with a History Channel special scheduled for March 2 would appear to risk a fine academic reputation on what might be called a shaggy Ark story.

The remains of two buildings thought to be the site of King David"s palace have been found in Jerusalem. The discovery was made at the site of what archaeologists believe to be the Judean city of Shaarayim where the Biblical clash between David and Goliath was said to have taken place. Some experts are skeptical however, questioning whether this is theactual site or if King David was even a king at all."The ruins are the best example to date of the uncovered fortress city of King David," said professors Yossi Garfinkel and Saar Ganor who lead the excavations.

"This is indisputable proof of the existence of a central authority in Judah during the time of King David." "Archaeologists in Jerusalem claim to have uncovered two large buildings fit fora king -- Biblical King David, that is."

More than five centuries of documents and manuscripts are to be preserved by placing them online. The Vatican"s library is packed full of historical texts and literary treasures dating back hundreds of years. The process of scanning more than 40 million pages however is no easy task thanks to bindings that disintegrate when opened and gold or silver illuminations that are particularly awkward to scan. "It is important to realize if there is gold or silver in a manuscript," said project leader LucianoAmmenti.

"That requires a very particular process because the light will be different."The effort to digitize the massive collection will ensure that the Vatican"s library is preserved for future generations with an estimated requirement of more than 43 petabytes of storage. "This is our dream, to give all the world access to our manuscripts," said Ammenti. "We start with the most delicate, the books that are in a critical situation for conservation." "The project, finally up and running a year after its announcement, uses an armada of equipmentto capture the vast range of pages amassed by the Vatican over five or six centuries into one of the world’s most valuable collection of books and manuscripts."

A mysterious stone structure has been discovered beneath the surface of Israel"s Sea of Galilee.Archaeologists remain perplexed by the nature and purpose of the structure which appears to consist of a large pile of cobbles and boulders weighing upwards of 60,000 tons. At 32ft high and 230ft across, the structure covers significantly more ground than Stonehenge and reaches higher than its tallest standing stones."Close inspection by scuba diving revealed that thestructure is made of basalt boulders up to 1 m (3.2 feet) long with no apparent construction pattern," said researchers.

"The boulders have natural faces with no signs of cutting or chiselling. Similarly, we did not find any sign of arrangement or walls that delineate this structure."The prevailing theory is that the structure was originally a cairn built on land and later submerged due to the rising water levels. Some researchers believe it could date back more than 4,000 years. "A giant "monumental" stonestructure discovered beneath the waters of the Sea of Galilee in Israel has archaeologists puzzled as to its purpose and even how long ago it was built."
