Lewis Gordon Pugh has raised eyebrows and made headline news around the world for his spectacular feats and remarkable resilience to the cold. Over 20 years Pugh has taken part in 17 long distance swims, including a 21 day slog along Sognefjord in Norway. But how does his body manage to endure such extreme cold ?"Perched on the edge of an Antarctic ice sheet, Lewis Gordon Pugh surveys the waves.

At 0 įC, water does not get much colder than the sea beneath him. Undeterred, Pugh unzips his jacket, strips down to his swimming trunks and dives in. Most of us would start to hyperventilate uncontrollably if we dived into such cold water. Pugh doesn"t even gasp in pain but instead starts swimming. In December 2005, when Pughtook this plunge, he went on to swim a kilometre in just over 18 minutes."

With pockets bulging with water, the Vietnamese man tried unsuccessfully to get through airport security. The peculiar smuggling attempt took place following a flight from Australia to NewZealand this week.

Airport security officials noticed that something was amiss when the man tried to get through the terminal with pockets that were soaking wet and bulging with water.Initially claiming that he had actually filled his pockets with water so that he"d have something to drink, the man was searched and found to be carrying a number of tropical fish that he had been attempting to smuggle in to the country."This appears to be a deliberate attempt to smuggle fish into the country withoutany consideration of the biosecurity risk involved," MPI spokesman Craig Hughes said in a statement. "That"s something we take very seriously. The fish could have been carrying diseases or have the potential to displace native species."The bungling smuggler now faces either a hefty fine or a stint of five years in prison.

Divers from Chinaís Hunan province have found a novel way to escape the scorching summer heat. As temperatures soared to 41 degrees in China this month, a new variation of the populartile-based game mahjong has been hitting the headlines.

Players with experience in scuba diving set up a table, chairs and a whole mahjong set at the bottom of a public swimming pool and played an entire game completely underwater.Unable to speak to one another, the participants resorted to holding up pieces of cardboard with markings drawn on them in order to communicate while playing. The tiles and furniture were also weighted to prevent them from floating upwards during the game."Playingmahjong underwater is for fun, and the real reason is to feel cool," one of the divers told a local newspaper. While footage of the intrepid group has proven popular in the region, some have questioned whether the whole thing is actually nothing more than a publicity stunt.
