Living in a snug farmhouse in North Guilford is Colin Andrews, the world's foremost expert on a spectacular phenomenon known as crop circles. Colin and his wife, Synthia, moved here in August 2004 from Branford. Soon, Colin will favor his new hometown with a talk on the crop circle phenomenon. Colin's discussion, arranged by Shoreline Outdoor Education Center, will be at the Dudley Farm Museum, Saturday, April 10 from 2 to 4 p.m. It is free to the public. A native of England, Colin says he has always been drawn to country environments, like the one he finds in North Guilford. "I'm a country person. It was in the English countryside that I first saw the mystery," he adds. Anelectrical engineer by profession and former senior official in British regional government, Colin has been intrigued by crop circles since 1983 when he saw his first formation, a Celtic Cross in a wheat field near Winchester, England.
"I was on my way to work, and there, out my window on a golden veil of wheat, I saw five circles in the shape of a cross," he recalls. The engineer in Colin had to know more. He walked out into what he describes as a "...virgin field of wheat, breaking a path," to the circles. He adds, "Immediately, bump! I thought, 'Was this an elaborate hoax?'" From that point, the research began, always with the intent of examining patterns from a scientific standpoint. In 1989, Colin co-authored (IT)Circular Evidence, the first book on the crop circlesubject, which became an international best-seller. He's since published two additional books, including (IT)Crop Circles, Signs of Evidence (2003, New Page Books) with (IT)New York Times best-selling author Stephen J. Spignesi. Colin's research group, Circles Phenomenon Research International, is currently based in Branford. Back in the mid-1980s, as he began to delve deeper into the topic, Colin left his job with the English government to form his research group. For three years, Colin advised the British government on crop circles, supplying technical and scientific reports to the then-Under-Secretary of State for the Environment in Margaret Thatcher's cabinet. At the time (IT)Circular Evidence was published, it was read by Queen Elizabeth, who made it the first book of its kind to be chosen forher pre...
