Angels have been a staple of spiritual beliefs for millennia, but is there any truth behind them ?The typical idea of an angel usually points to a tall, winged being bathed in light who acts as the bringer of good fortune, healing or salvation. Angels make common appearances in greetings cards, decorations and in popular media during the holidays. While the word "angel" means "messenger" in Hebrew, these days they have been regarded more as guardians. Some peoplehave attributed their recovery from a serious illness or survival of a car accident to angelic intervention.A 2007 survey found that on average more than half of those who identify themselves as religious believe that they have had an experience with an angel.

Despite there being no concrete evidence to support the existence of such beings they are nonetheless well established both in popular culture and the general consciousness of both the spiritual and non-spiritual alike. Angels can take many forms, usuallyappearing as human or a glowing light or aura. Often - especially in cases of averted tragedy or disaster - angels will not be seen at all, but instead recognized by their actions.

Illinois Senator Mark Kirk had an otherworldly experience while recovering from a massive stroke.Kirk had been taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago and was recovering in intensive care when he recalled seeing three "angels" standing at the foot of his bed. "You want to come with us ?" one of them asked. "No," Kirk replied, "I"ll hold off." When questioned about the incident he later commented "a thing goes off in yourhead that this is the end."Kirk"s experience is similar to those of more than 8 million people in America alone who have reported some form of celestial visitation of near-death experience.

Some of the more common things people report include witnessing a bright light or tunnel, a feeling of floating up out of your body and a sense of intense euphoria and peace. Illinois Senator Mark Kirk has wrestled with lots of devilish political issues during his 28-year political career, but after suffering a stroke one year ago, he claims he had a very different experience: an encounter with angels.

Chuck Sambuchino has raised eyebrows this week with his rather peculiar book "How to Survive a Garden Gnome Attack."The bizarre publication explains how to avoid being attacked by "murderous" garden gnomes which Sambuchino claims to be a "serious problem". Though purely a tongue-in-cheek affair the book hasgained quite a bit of attention.

Zombies get more press, but garden gnomes may be a bigger threat to public safety. Or so says Chuck Sambuchino of Cincinnati, who is on a one-man crusade to warn his fellow citizens about the looming dangers garden gnomes present to America"s suburbs and rural areas.
