AS urban myths go, you can’t get much bigger than the big cat. Reports of giant jet-black beasts - some "4ft long and 5ft high" - bounding through the countryside, leaving a bloody trail of massacred sheep in their wake, are not uncommon. Annual sightings of the elusive animals reported to the Scottish Big Cat Society have rocketed over the past five years from dozens to hundreds. This year alone there have been numerous reports of big cats in areas across the country, including Aberdeenshire, Ayrshire and Renfrewshire. Fearsome felines have also been reported in much more populated areas, including Edinburgh, where only last month a manclaimed to have seen a large black cat in the grounds of Merchiston Castle School.

The previous month a dog-walker claimed to have seen a 3ft-long black cat "with a 3ft tail" at 5pm one afternoon just outside Haddington in East Lothian. Harder evidence in recent years includes a photograph of a big cat spotted roaming in Fife in 1997 and large paw prints which were found near East Calder in West Lothian. While some witnesses may have overactive imaginations, and a knack for blowing things out of proportion, experts say the beasts really are out there somewhere. Scotland, with its wild, rugged landscape, and plentiful supply of food, is an ideal hunting ground for such creatures. And the Scottish Big Cat Society is about to begin astudy to prove once and for all that the animals are not just a shaggy cat story. Mark Fraser, who will lead the society’s week-long study next month, says: "There are a lot of cases of mistaken identity, and there aren’t as many big cats out there as the reports suggest, or we would have more in Scotland than there are in Africa." Explaining the increase in sightings, he says: "Sightings have shot sky-high, because of publicity [about other sightings]. People are more confident in coming forward because they think they will be taken seriously. Although they genuinely believe they have seen a large cat, nine times out of ten the prints and the sheep kills we find are from dogs." But he is adamant that there are big cats inthe wild in. ...

Legendary 'Unicorns' Have Individual Voices

Arctic whales whose long, spiraled tusks created the myth of the unicorn seem to call out with individual voices, according to a new study. Researchers think the vocalizations help narwhals to recognize each other or reunite with distant pods, just as our relatives can identify us over the phone, for instance. Scientists have known that marine mammals rely on acoustic signaling for underwater communication. Whales speak in dialects, a recent study found. But few studies have looked at in...

The mystical seven

Anthony North: No number seems to be more mystical than the number seven. Throughout the world there seems to be a 'knowing' about its wider significance. But why is this? Could the ancients have intuited something we have missed? The number is forever associated with the spiritual. By this, we mean some form of god-force, best explained as something 'other' than us. Yet I'm uncomfortable with this definition. If it is 'other', then we are separate to it.: I'd pre...

06/06/06 - A date marked with caution

For one group of expectant mothers, their due date holds an extra dimension of dread. The prospect of giving birth on June 6, 6/6/06, has prompted talk of spawning devil children on Armageddon day. A British self-help group that usually exchanges routine tips on parenting has turned its attention to the dangers of a date marked by the satanic symbol. For Hollywood and the worldwide entertainment industry it is by contrast a once-in-a- century opportunity to turn evil into gold. Leading the charg...

Man More Than Myth

Bram Stoker's Dracula, published in 1897, continues to send shivers down the spine of anyone who reads it. It is dark Gothic at its best, a brilliant, imaginative and can't-put-down work of art. The atmosphere it creates is, in this writer's opinion, spookier than any Stephen King novel.But...many people who have read the book are not aware that the character Dracula the vampire is based on was a highborn member of a Romanian court, prominent in European history – and much mo...

Exploring the Nature of the Unnatural

They lure children into dank swamps and devour them. They live in caves or among high rocks or deep in dense forests. They are covered with scales or thick fur. They have hands at the ends of their tails or a single glaring eye. They exhale fire, cause hurricanes with their wings or feast on human eyes, teeth and nails. They might also whimsically help the unwitting, but they are almost all mercurial, unreliable, tricksters. Such are the mythic creatures of our earth. Their dwelling plac...
