When a space station astronaut made an offhand remark about an unusual formation of lights he saw passing in front of him during a spacewalk, the report had all the earmarks of an unsolvable space mystery. But it didn't take long to crack the case, thanks to the power of the Internet and one amateur space sleuth’s passion to find out.It turned out that the case of the formation-flying lights was only the latest in a string of spooky space effects with perfectly natural explanations.
The investigation began when NASA astronaut
Leroy Chiao told Aviation Week & Space Technology about"something
interesting" he saw during a March 28 spacewalk with Russian crewmate
Salizhan Sharipov.“As the sun started
rising after the first dark period, I looked out in the opposite
direction of the sun and saw a line of five lights,” Chiao said.
The
lights seemed to be flying past fairly quickly "in an echelon
formation, except that 'No. 2' was offset," he said.Chiao
admitted that he didn't know what the lights were, but he speculated
that they might have been a constellation of satellites catching the
sun's glint. Or perhaps they were "bright lights from oil platforms
actually down on the Earth" that seemed to move due to the space
station's own orbital speed.Whatever they
were, Chiao was delighted to have seen them. "It just shows you that
after spending a lot oftime in space and out on EVAs, there are still
things that you can see that still surprise you," he mused.Enter the investigatorOne
person who read the story was not surprised, since he had long been
fascinated with unusual visual phenomena associated with space
missions. James C. Smith, an aerospace engineer in Fairfax, Va.,
doesn't believe such phenomena are signs of alien visits. What he does
believe — and what makes his work on this and other cases so impressive
— is that such mysteries can often be solved, using resources available
over the Internet. You just have to know where to look and what to do.Based
on Chiao's descriptions, Smith figured out the time and the station's
location over Earth when the lights were sighted — and deduced that
Chiao must have been looking toward the coast ofSouth A......

The upcoming generation of space telescopes will for the first time be able to detect "biosignatures" in the light from extrasolar planets, allowing us to directly determine whether a planet"s atmosphere could support life as we know it."Signs of life on planets beyond our own solar system may soon be in our sights. Experiments andcalculations presented at an astrobiology meeting last week reveal how the coming generation ...Alien contact attempts date back 150 years
The desire to contact intelligent life on other planets is much older than the UFO craze and the SETI movement. Several 19th century scientists contemplated how we might communicate with possible Martians and Venusians. These early proposals- which predate by 150 years the first extraterrestrial message that was sent in 1974 - were based onvisual signals, as the invention of radio was still decades away. . In fact, as history sh...Zecharia Sitchin : looking for alien DNA

"I"m really risking my life"s work on this outcome," hesaid.

The UN are appointing an astrophysicist to be the world"s representative in the event of alien contact.Mazlan Othman has been assigned the position as the number of planets being discovered around distant stars is said to be increasing the chances of alien contact. Astronomer Seth Shostak believes that we should be looking out for signs of an extraterrestrial artificial intelligence. The Seti astronomer believes that the time between an alien civilization developing radio communications and artificial intelligence would be quite short and that we should be keeping an eyeout for evidence of intelligent machines.

A mysterious signal picked up by SETI in 1977 has remained one of the most tantalising ever discoveries.Robert Gray and others like him have spent many years attempting to duplicate the notorious signal. Picked up by a radio telescope in Delaware, it lasted only 72 seconds and intrigued scientist Jerry Ehman so much that he famously wrote "Wow!" in red inkon the readout. But whereexactly did the signal come from and could it have really come from an alien intelligence ? Late one n...Hawking warns of alien invasion threat
Stephen Hawking has said that any attempt to contact extraterrestrial life could be dangerous. In his new book "First Contact", Marc Kaufman cites Hawking"s comments to help him explore in detail the less common view that reaching out to contact an intelligent extraterrestrial civilization could prove disasterous and that doing so could constitute an invite for them to come toour planet and plunder all our natural resources. Newest release by Assange may disappoint those waiting for fresh, substantial evidence of UFOs.Julian Assange of WikiLeaks fame told The Guardian in early December that "it is worth noting that in yet-to-be-published parts of the Cablegate archive there are indeed referencesto UFOs." Unfortunately, recent documents have stopped short of incontrovertible evidence; in fact, it brought to light four-year-old news that funding has been cut because of decreased general interest in the unexplained. ...
