In September 2006, Nature reported on a study, done by Shahar Arzy and colleagues of the University Hospital of Geneva, Switzerland. The researchers had unexpectedly replicated the effects of the doppelganger phenomenon via electromagnetic stimulation of the patient’s brain. While receiving electrical stimulation to the left temporoparietal junction, the patient felt the presence of another person directly behind her, whom the patient described as “young, of indeterminate sex, silent, motionless and with a body posture identical to her own.” When repeated with more intensity, the patient felt the presence of a “man” whom had his arms wrapped around her. While seated, the patient was asked to perform a language test with a set of cards, and the electrical stimulation was applied again.

The patient reported the presence of another man, sitting behind her, to the right, who was attempting to interfere with the test. “He wants to take the card; he doesn’t want me to read” she told the researchers. As a result of this research, it is being theorized that many doppelgangers are the fault of a failing left temporoparietel junction, rather than the classical explanation of monothematic delusions. The concept of having another being parading the earth that is exactly identical to one’s self is something that has proved fascinating yet frightening for humankind for the past few hundred years. Queen Elizabeth I reportedly saw herself lying pale and still in a vision, soon before she died. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, the German polymath is said to have seen his double adorned with a gray suit, trimmed in gold, riding towards him in the opposite direction while on his way to Drusenheim. Eight years later, while riding from Drusenheim on the very same road, he realized he was wearing the exact outfit that he had seen on his double eight years earlier, somewhat personifying his philosophical Apollonian and Dionysian. Catherine the Great of Russia saw her own image coming toward her and became so frightened that she ordered her soldiers to shoot and demobilize the ghastly replica. Much to her surprise, this was without effect.

Researchers at the University of Washington have built a working human-to-human mind control system. Previous mind control research has enabled brain-to-brain communication between rats but it is believed that this is the first time such a system has been successful with human subjects. The remarkable experiment was conducted by Rajesh Rao and Andrea Stocco who captured the wholething on video.

Rao was equipped with a special cap fitted with electrodes that were hooked up to a machine capable of reading electrical activity in the brain, while Stocco sat at the other side of the campus with a transcranial magnetic stimulation coil placed over the region of his brain responsible for hand movements. For the experiment Rao would look at a screen and play a simple computer game that involved firing a cannon, but instead of actually pressing a button he instead imagined his right hand moving to do so. Across campus, Stocco, who was unable to see or hear the game, felt his hand moving in correlation to Rao"s thoughts, a sensation that he likened to a nervous tic."It was both exciting and eerieto watch an imagined action from my brain get translated into actual action by another brain," said Rao. "This was basically a one-way flow of information from my brain to his. The next step is having a more equitable two-way conversation directly between the two brains."

What happens when your team doesn"t win ?

Supporting a sports team that doesn"t do very well could actually be harmful to your own health. Researchers at the European Institute of Business Administration have found thatexperiencing the defeat of your favorite team at a sports game can do more than just make you feel down, it can actually have a measurable physical impact on your health. In a new study, Professor Pierre Chandon and doctoral student Yann Cornil determined that fans are more likely to binge on foods rich in calories and saturated fats the day after their team suffers a major defeat. To learn more about this connection, Cornil and Chandon looked at the eating behavior of fans after two seasons of NFLgames.

The results indicated that fans ate up to 16 percent more unhealthy foods following a loss for their team compared to a win."The idea could be that there is comfort in food," said Dr. Cornil. "We reach for sweet and fatty food in particular, like cake or chips, as it helps ease our mood."

Scientists have been able to successfully implant memories of events that never happened in to mice. The idea of giving someone false memories is well known from science fiction movies such as "Total Recall" in which Arnold Schwarzenegger has memories of a holiday to Mars implanted in to his brain. The study indicates that it is possible to hold memories of something that didn"t happen and has even raised concerns over thevalidity of witness testimonies in court."Whether it"s a false or genuine memory, the brain"s neural mechanism underlying the recall of the memory is the same," said senior researcher Professor Susumu Tonegawa.

"Humans are highly imaginative animals. Just like our mice, an aversive or appetitive event could be associated with a past experience one may happen to have in mind at that moment, hence a false memory is formed." "Scientists genetically modified mice so that theirbrain cells produced a light sensitive chemical when they formed new memories."
