
When Apollo 12 returned to Earth in 1969, microorganisms were found on one of the cameras.At the time some believed that this suggested that microbes had stowed away inside the camera during the whole trip, however looking back on things now in more detail scientists have drawn different conclusions - that the camera had been contaminated withthe microbes after it had returned to Earth.
There has been a long-lived bit of Apollo moon landing folklore that now appears to be a dead-end affair: microbes on the moon. The lunar mystery swirls around the Apollo 12 moon landing and the return to Earth by moonwalkers of a camera that was part of an early NASA robotic lander – the Surveyor 3 probe.
