In September 2006, Nature reported on a study, done by Shahar Arzy and colleagues of the University Hospital of Geneva, Switzerland. The researchers had unexpectedly replicated the effects of the doppelganger phenomenon via electromagnetic stimulation of the patient’s brain. While receiving electrical stimulation to the left temporoparietal junction, the patient felt the presence of another person directly behind her, whom the patient described as “young, of indeterminate sex, silent, motionless and with a body posture identical to her own.” When repeated with more intensity, the patient felt the presence of a “man” whom had his arms wrapped around her. While seated, the patient was asked to perform a language test with a set of cards, and the electrical stimulation was applied again.

The patient reported the presence of another man, sitting behind her, to the right, who was attempting to interfere with the test. “He wants to take the card; he doesn’t want me to read” she told the researchers. As a result of this research, it is being theorized that many doppelgangers are the fault of a failing left temporoparietel junction, rather than the classical explanation of monothematic delusions. The concept of having another being parading the earth that is exactly identical to one’s self is something that has proved fascinating yet frightening for humankind for the past few hundred years. Queen Elizabeth I reportedly saw herself lying pale and still in a vision, soon before she died. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, the German polymath is said to have seen his double adorned with a gray suit, trimmed in gold, riding towards him in the opposite direction while on his way to Drusenheim. Eight years later, while riding from Drusenheim on the very same road, he realized he was wearing the exact outfit that he had seen on his double eight years earlier, somewhat personifying his philosophical Apollonian and Dionysian. Catherine the Great of Russia saw her own image coming toward her and became so frightened that she ordered her soldiers to shoot and demobilize the ghastly replica. Much to her surprise, this was without effect.

Scientists believe a surge of electrical activity in the brain could explain the NDE phenomenon.People who have been on the brink of death or who have died and been resuscitated have often described unusual experiences that include seeing a tunnel of light, the sensation of floating above one"s own body or the feeling of a divine presence. Some attribute these experiences to the passage between this life and the next, but scientistsbelieve there may be a more down-to-earth explanation. In a new study, researchers discovered that electrical activity in the brain could account for the vivid experiences some people describe.

"A lot of people thought that the brain after clinical death was inactive or hypoactive, with less activity than the waking state, and we show that is definitely not the case," said study lead author Dr Jimo Borjigin. "If anything, it is much more active during the dying process than even the waking state." "A surge of electrical activity in the brain could be responsible for the vivid experiences described by near-death survivors, scientists report."

A mysterious priest that turned up at the scene of an accident in Missouri is being hailed as an "angel".The accident involved a collision between two cars, one of which being driven by student Katie Lentz. Her car was partially crushed and emergency workers had been struggling to cut through the twisted wreck to free her when a black-garbed priest appeared on the scene and said he would pray for her. Nobody seemed to know who the priest was nor where he had come from, he wasn"t from any of thelocal churches.Shortly afterwards everything seemed to start going right - emergency workers succeeded in rescuing Lentz from the wreck and she was rushed to hospital.

Turning to thank the priest for his support, rescue team members discovered that he had completely disappeared, never to be seen again. Even stranger was the fact that despite dozens of photographs being taken at the scene covering all aspects of the rescue, the mysterious priest did not appear in a single one of them. "Emergency workers and community members in easternMissouri are not sure what to make of a mystery priest who showed up at a critical accident scene Sunday morning and whose prayer seemed to change life-threatening events for the positive."
