
NASA have successfully tested a new inflatable heat shield made of silicone-coated Kevlar that can be used in future space missions to help slow down and protect astronauts from thesearing heat of re-entry."NASA launched an inflatable spacecraft heat shield on Monday to test the technology for use on future space missions.
The test flight lofted a vacuum-packed shroud atop a small sounding rocket from NASA"s Wallops FlightFacility on Wallops Island, Va."
