Harvard University psychology researcher Susan Clancy thinks the chances are good that you know at least one person who claims to have been abducted by aliens. And she has another surprise: The people who tell these stories aren't candidates for the funny farm. "They're not nuts," said Clancy, a postdoctoral researcher and author of a new book, the first to analyze the psychological underpinnings of abduction stories. "They're normal." Not that Clancy gives any credence to the countless tales of horny aliens, UFO-borne medical examinations and intrusive probes of nether regions. No one, she said, has actually been kidnapped by extraterrestrials. Instead, Clancypoints to other causes including sleep hallucinations, innate suggestibility and a deeply human desire to explain the world.

Pop culture plays a major role, too. These theories have been around for a while, but Clancy weaves them together in Abducted: How People Come to Believe They Were Kidnapped by Aliens to create a new, overarching explanation for alien-abduction stories, one that draws heavily on her own interviews with about 50 alleged abductees. And she throws in a new wrinkle: Despite the horrors that many abductees report enduring, including rape, they don't regret the experiences. In each case, the abduction "transformed their lives, made them feel better about themselves and the world they were living in," said Clancy, a postdoctoral fellow and one of the few American academics whostudy alien-abduction stories as a way to understand how people develop "unusual beliefs." It's impossible to know exactly how many Americans think they were abducted by aliens, although polls suggest about a quarter of us think extraterrestrials have dropped by the planet. While it's true that plenty of abductees are happy to tell their stories on the radio and the internet, Clancy said in an interview, others keep their stories to themselves because they fear being written off as crazy. Regardless of whether they broadcast their stories to the world, "they're not more likely than people who don't believe to be psychiatrically impaired," she said. In fact, the lives and occupations of abductees are often entirely ordinary. Clancy writes about her interviews with severalschoolte...

Alien abduction claims explained

Many of the people who believe they have been abducted by aliens are bombarding Susan Clancy with hate e-mails and phone calls. The Harvard researcher, who has spent five years listening to the stories of some 50 abductees, has described her (and their) experiences in a new book to be published in October. Clancy, 36, likes most of these people. "They are definitely not crazy," she says. But they do have "a tendency to fantasize and to hold unusual beliefs and ideas. They believe ...

Abductee Betty Hill Dies, Aged 85

Betty Hill of Portsmouth, who along with her late husband in 1961, had the first publicized and best-documented UFO experience in the White Mountains, died Sunday in her sleep after a battle with lung cancer. She was 85. On a return trip from Canada, the Hills said they were abducted for two hours by a UFO on Sept. 19, 1961. After going public with their story, the two gained worldwide notoriety. Their story became the subject of a book and later, a made-for-TV movie starringJames Earl Jones and...

Alien abduction real even if imagined

There are some people in the world who believe without the need for provable facts, and hold to the idea that aliens kidnap people from time to time, maybe though not necessarily counting themselves among those who have gone into space when they thought they were going to bed or for a walk in the woods. The belief in, and experience of, alien abduction is not too far removed at all from spiritual ideas and experiences of all kinds. It is essentially benign. When you consider that there are some t...

Close Encounter Cluture

The strange history of "alien abduction" began in 1966 with publication of John G Fuller's The Interrupted Journey, about the 1961 encounter in New Hampshire of Betty and Barney Hill. The couple said they had been taken aboard a spacecraft and subjected to detailed anatomical examinations by alien beings. The book was a best-seller, not least because a highly esteemed Boston psychiatrist used the then new technique of regressive hypnosis to uncover the Hills' buried me...

Kalmykia leader recalls alien abduction

Life is not all plain sailing for Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, the flamboyant leader of the Russian republic of Kalmykia. For a start, his Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit II needs constant repairs thanks to the rutted roads of his impoverished fiefdom. And then there is the danger of alien abduction. He has already been pressganged into one trip on a UFO - seven years ago when he was on a business trip to Moscow. "They took me from my apartment and we went aboard their ship," he says, sitting in hiso...

Abductee shares proof that we are not alone

Craig Jacocks’ Aware of Their Presence is set to be the first major book about alien abduction since Whitley Streiber’s best seller Communion. But, Jacocks has something even Streiber did not: proof. In the book, Jacocks recounts details from the many times he was abducted by aliens, beginning when he was a young child. He details how the encounters grew in intensity and how he began to realize he was dealing with humanoid beings withamazing abilities. Gradually, he began to hear their voices an...

Near-death experiences and UFO kidnappings

Those familiar with the near-death phenomenon, particularly the tunnel with a bright light at the end of it and a usually benign figure who comforts the dying person, might find commonality with the UFO abductee tales and other flying saucer encounters over the years. The near-death experience is mystical, and can be dealt with along theological lines, or with the help of William James’ The Varieties of Religious Experiences and more recent tomes such as Raymond Moody’s Life After Life….There ar...

The abduction quandary

RRRGroup: We won’t rehash the abduction phenomenon except to say that the “experience” hasn’t been researched as thoroughly as it should be. For instance, one has to ask why an alien culture (intergalactic, inter-dimensional, subliminally Earthian, or whatever) would resort to interacting with persons who are in a normal state of being (sleeping, in their cars, and otherwise occupied with mundane activity) when there are so many available humans in precarious situations, alone in remote areas, a...
