
A multi-billion dollar railway tunnel project is in doubt over land patrolled by a swamp monster.The local Maori have protested the development of the new railway because they believe the area is home to a mythical creature, the taniwha. It isn"t the first time this has happened either, in 2002 the construction of a road was halted under similarcircumstances.
Glenn Wilcox, a member of the Maori Statutory Board, which protects Maori interests, complained that the plan did not take into account the monster, which "was here first". The taniwha is a mythical protector with a powerful role in Maori folklore, but get it angry and you"re in trouble, Mr Wilcox said.
