Marfa is a little town in the middle of the Chihuahuan Desert in West Texas that is famous only for being the place where James Dean filmed his last movie, Giant, and the presence of a viewing platform that teems with people come dusk. For, when the sun goes down, garden chairs are set up and binoculars and cameras firmly fixed on the horizon as people hope they will experience one of the most famous unexplained phenomena in the US, the Marfa Mystery Lights. The lights have been described as glowing balls around 4m in diameter that bounce up and down, a little like the 'ping-pong balls' used to denote when you should sing when watching an old musical.BradSmyth, of Texas Economic Development & Tourism, had a 40min Marfa Lights experience three years ago.
He says: 'It was after dusk when three or four lights seemed to appear on the horizon.
They then started to move and glow brighter and changed from bright white to subtle yellows and pinks.'
The first recorded sighting
of the lights was in 1883 by the rancher Robert Reed Ellison in an area
of the desert called Mitchell Flat, but they occurred many years before
that in Native American folklore where they were described as 'stars
falling from the sky'.
Inevitably, in the 1950s,
American pop culture conspired to describe the lights as navigational
signals for flying saucers but, despite the recent debunkings of many
UFO myths, sightings persist.

Explanations that have been
touted include suggestions that they are the result of plasma, swamp
gas and piezoelectric phenomena - where minor earthquakes cause an
accumulated charge in underground seams of quartz that is released into
the atmosphere as balls of lightning.
There have also been less
plausible explanations, such as them being the ghosts of the Spanish
conquistadores looking for gold. James Bunnell, a retired aerospace
engineer and author of the books Seeing Marfa Lights and Night Orbs,
has been studying the area for three years and has more than 60 images
of the lights taken by a surveillance camera that photographs Mitchell
Flat every 1.4 seconds. He believes the lights occur when high-energy
subatomic particles from the Van Allen radiation belts that surround
the Earth are drawn to the Earth's magnetic field. Theseparticles
Submitted by Alex Zelaya: In the world of history, thanks to Darwin"s theory of evolution, the accepted cradle of civilization is commonly cited by scholars as being the continent of Africa. The Middle East - notably, in the area of 5 rivers; the Tigris-Euphrates (in modern day Iraq), the Nile in Africa, the Indus in South Asia, and the Huang-He-Yangtze in China are also figured prominently in the development of humankind. We"re told modern civilization is but 10,000 years old, but if that"s the...Oldest skeleton in Americas found underwater ?
Deep inside an underwater cave in Mexico, archaeologists may have discovered the oldest human skeleton ever found in the Americas. Dubbed Eva de Naharon, or Eve of Naharon, the female skeleton has been dated at 13,600 years old. If that age is accurate, the skeleton—along with three others found in underwater caves along the Caribbean coast of the Yucatán Peninsula—could provide new clues to how the Americas were first populated. The remains have been excavated over the past four years near the ...This iPod user rocks

Members of a Native American group based in a remote part of Arizona are hoping to entice more tourists by inviting visitors to step off the edge of the Grand Canyon. The 1,500-member Hualapai tribe announced last week that the Skywalk—a giant, 30-million-dollar steel-and-glass walkway—will open to the public in March 2007. The Skywalk will jut out 70 feet (21 meters) from the canyon rim, allowing tourists to go for a stroll with nothing between their feet and the Colorado River—4,000 fe...Africans came with Columbus to New World

Scientists believe Americans reached Europe over 500 years before Columbus reached America. The research is based on studies of the genetic past of an Icelandic family the results of which suggest that a woman from the Americas reached Iceland almost 1000 years ago. WhenChristopher Columbus paraded his newly discovered American Indians through the streets ofSpanish towns at the end of the 15th century, he was not in fact introducing the first native Americans to Europe, according to ne...Mystery of Devils Hole
A mysterious bottomless pit in the Pacific Northwest has been the subject of stories for decades. The mere existence of the hole is a matter of much controversy as nobody is sure where it even is. A Native American shaman called Red Elk is said to be one of the only people alive to have ever seen it, he claimed that the hole was "endless" and that strange things would happen whenever he went near it. More recently, Mel Watersspoke to Art Bell on Coast to Coast when he claimed to have c...China map lays claim to Americas
Submitted by Xsas: A map due to be unveiled in Beijing and London next week may lend weight to a theory a Chinese admiral discovered America before Christopher Columbus. The map, which shows North and South America, apparently states that it is a 1763 copy of another map made in 1418. If true, it could imply Chinese mariners discovered and mapped America decades before Columbus' 1492 arrival. The map, which is being dated to check it was made in 1763, faces a lot of scepticism from experts. ...
