Crop Circles

A Maryville man says something weird is happening on his property, and while Jack Ledbetter isn't suggesting it's the work of aliens, he has no answer for it. Ledbetter is perplexed by a patch of dead grass on his four acre lot off Montvale Road. It's a perfect circle, about 15 feet in diameter, with green grass and a small hole in the middle. He's been scratching his head over this the past few years. "About three years ago, I was walking down through there and my foot just punched into the groundthere," says Ledbetter a retired machinist, referring to the spot in his yard.

"About six months later, this circle then just turned light green. Now this year, it's come to just died." 10 News asked got UT Agricultural Extension Agent, Neal Denton to look at our videotape of Ledbetter's mysterious ring. "It looks like a fairy ring," says Denton. A fairy ring is a fairly common fungus that moves out from the center of where a tree stump is buried. Denton says he's seen these rings about 15 times in the past 10 years. "It's a real interesting phenomenon. Not much you can do forit. Just let it go through its cycle and eventually it will go away," says Denton.Ledbetter says he hasn't tried to plant new grass on his yard circle, and although he finds Denton's explanation interesting, he has other theories."I think it's a little strange. The theory of my son (is that) the Confederate gold hoard been there...," laughs Ledbetter. "That's just a joke; I could never be that lucky."

A series of mysterious crop circles have turned up in a wheat field near to the Grand Coulee dam.The designs resemble a four-leaf clover and have flattened over an acre of wheat, however farm owners Cindy and Greg Geib don"t seem to be too concerned by the intrusion. "You can’t do anything other than laugh about it," said Cindy. "You just kind of roll with the theory it’s aliens and you’re special because aliens chose your spot."Whilesome of the flattened wheat can be salvaged, inevitably at least some of it will be lost.

"We’re trying to figure out how they got out there without breaking any of the wheat. It’s hard to walk through the crunchy wheat and not knock it down," said Cindy. "At the same time, it’s hard to think it’s aliens. It’s a bizarre thing to wrap your brain around." Mysterious crop circles have appeared in an Eastern Washington wheat field - not far from the nation’s largest hydropower producer— but area farmers preparing for the summer’s harvest find the distraction more amusing than alarming.

Its one the most enduring phenomena of recent times, but just how are complex crop circles created ?Richard Taylor, director of the Materials Science Institute at the University of Oregon, believes that some of the most complex crop circles have been created through the use of the Global Positioning System (GPS), lasers and microwaves in place ofthe more traditional wooden planks and rope.

As the global crop-circle phenomenon grows alongside advances in science and technology, Taylor notes how physics and the arts are coming together to produce more impressive and spectacular crop-circle patterns that still manage to maintain their mystery.

A massive crop circle has turned up in a wheat field right next to the historic Stonehenge.Speculation continues as to who is responsible, some believe the circle is man-made while others favour the idea that it was formed naturally either via magnetic fields or some other force we don"t yet understand. The circle is only one of many to haveappeared in Wiltshire over the last few weeks.

Who built Stonehenge has long been the subject of debate among scholars. But now the ancient site has offered up another conundrum - in the form of a giant crop circle. This impressive 200ft design appeared within sight of the ancient monument yesterday.
