The Himalaya Mountains, the
highest range on Earth, have been referred to as the "roof of the world." If
that is so, there is a mystery called the Yeti in our attic. In Tibetan
the word means "magical creature" and truly it is a seemingly supernatural
enigma in the shape of a hairy, biped creature that resembles a giant ape. The Himalayas lie on the border
between India, Nepal, and Tibet (now part of China). They are remote and
forbidding. Large stretches around these rough valleys and peaks are
uninhabited. The tallest mountain in the world, Everest, 29,028 feet high, lies
half in Nepal, half in China. It is from Nepal, though, that most attempts to
climb Everest, and the surrounding mountains, are made. In Katmandu, the capitol of Nepal,
a visitor finds himself immersed in the Yeti legend. He is a commercial money
maker for the tourist industry (there's even a Hotel named the "Yak and the
Yeti") as well as legend, religion and fantasy to some of the Neplaese people.
The first reliable report of the
Yeti appeared in 1925 when a Greek photographer, N. A. Tombazi, working
as a member of a British geological expedition in the Himalayas, was shown a
creature moving in the distance across some lower slopes. The creature was
almost a thousand feet away in a narea with an altitude of around 15,000 feet. "Unquestionably, the figure in
outline was exactly like a human being, walking upright and stopping
occasionally to uproot or pull at some dwarf rhododendron bushes," said Tombazi,
"It showed up dark against the snow and, as far as I could make out wore no
clothes." The creature disappeared before
Tombazi could take a photograph and was not seen again. The group was
descending, though, and the photographer went out of his way to see the ground
were he had spotted the creature. Tombazi found footprints in the snow."They were similar in shape to
those of a man, but only six to seven inches long by four inches wide at the
broadest part of the foot. The marks of five distinct toes and the instep were
perfectly clear, but the trace of the heel was indistinct..."

Bigfoot a.k.a. Abominable
Snowman of the Himalayas, Mapinguari (the Amazon), Sasquatch, Yowie (Australia)
and Yeti (Asia)
An ape like creature reportedly sighted hundreds
of times around the world since the mid-19th century. The creature is variously
described as standing 7-10 ft (2-3 m) tall and weighing over 500 lb (225 kg),
with footprints 17 in. (43 cm) long. The creature goes by many names, but in
northern California it is known as ?Bigfoot.? (It is also known as the
Abominable Snowman of the Himalayas, Mapinguari [the Amazon], Sasquatch, Yowie
[Australia] and Yeti [Asia]). The creature is big business in the Pacific
Northwest along a stretch of US-101 in southern Humboldt County known as the
Redwood Highway. Numerous shops line the roadway, each with its own Bigfoot
chainsaw-carved out of majestic redwood.
Most scientists discount the existence of
Bigfoot because the evidence supporting belief in the survival of a prehistoric
bipedal apelike creature of such dimensions is scant. One notable exception is
Grover S. Krantz (1931-2002), an anthropologist at Washington State University.
For nearly forty years, Krantz argued for the probable existence of Bigfoot,*
but was unable to convince the majority of scientists. The evidence for
Bigfoot?s existence consists mainly of testimony from Bigfoot enthusiasts,
footprints of questionable origin, and pictures that could easily have been of
apes or humans in ape suits. There are no bones, no scat, no artifacts, no dead
bodies, no mothers with babies, no adolescents, no fur, no nothing. Not that
there aren't "sightings" of such. There are "sightings" galore. Just check
The Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization's
website for an uncritical list of sightings. However, there is no evidence
that any individual or community of such creatures dwells anywhere near any of
the ?sightings.? In short, the evidence points more towards hoaxing and delusion
than real discovery. Some believers dismiss all such criticism and claim that
Bigfoot exists in another dimension and travels by astral projection. Such claims
reinforce the skeptic?s view that the Bigfoot legend is a function of passionate
fans of the paranormal, aided
greatly by the mass media?s eagerness to cater to such enthusiasm.

The first photographic evidence that the yeti, or abominable snowman, might be more than a flight of Himalayan fancy has surfaced in public and is to be offered at auction later this month. Four photographs of large paw prints in the snow beneath Mount Everest are to be sold at Christie's in London on September 26. The images were taken by the legendary British mountaineer Eric Shipton on a reconaissance trip to Everest in 1951, in preparation for the first successful ascent of the 29,028 ft... Read More
Deep in the Congolese jungle is a band of apes that, according to local legend, kill lions, catch fish and even howl at the moon. Local hunters speak of massive creatures that seem to be some sort of hybrid between a chimp and a gorilla. Their location at the centre of one of the bloodiest conflicts on the planet, the civil war in the Democratic Republic of Congo, has meant that the mystery apes have been little studied by western scientists. Reaching the region means negotiating the shifting fo... Read More
Claims by terrified villagers that "bigfoot"-type hairy giants are roaming the jungles of India's remote northeast have prompted authorities to order an investigation, a local official said. The bizarre sightings have been made in the Garo hills area of Meghalaya state, close to the borders with Bangladesh and Bhutan, with villagers calling the mysterious creatures "Mande Burung" -- or Jungle Man."A team of wildlife officials and other experts will conduct a study to... “Gigantic, hairy, ape-like...” was all that Abu Marak could utter in between gasps for breath. Surrounded by villagers in the safety of his house near Durabanda in the West Garo Hills, Abu’s eyes still mirrored the excitement of spotting the animal. Within a few days, Abu’s account, coupled with those of a few other villagers, became the raw material for a renewed scientific search for the legendary Big Foot — mande burung in Garo.Sasquatch in North America, yowie in Australia, yeti in Nepal — B... Bigfoot, the legendary hairy man-like beast said to roam the wildernesses of North America, is not shy, merely so rare it risks extinction and should be protected as an endangered species. So says Canadian MP Mike Lake who has called for Bigfoot to be protected under Canada's species at risk act, alongside Whooping Cranes, Blue Whales, and Red Mulberry trees. "The debate over their (Bigfoot's) existence is moot in the circumstance of their tenuous hold on merely existing," read... Read More
The producer of Bigfoot's Reflection says he was sure of the creature's existence after wrapping the documentary in the wilds of British Columbia and Washington State earlier this year. The hour-long doc, which will be broadcast on Space in May, takes a fair-minded look at Bigfoot hunters. That is, people who are out to prove that the big guy exists. "They make a good case. And there is lots of deep dark forest out there," Frederic Bohbot tells Playback Daily.Bohbot's film,... Read More
