A huge underwater bug kept at the Toba Aquarium in Japan has been on a hunger strike for four years.Images of giant isopods have circulated the Internet for years and a lot of the time these have been dismissed as clever fakes. In truth however, the giant isopod is a very real creature indeed and lives 100m under the surface of the ocean where it scavenges for food. While the isopods can go for quite some time without eating anything, the specimen kept at the Toba Aquarium has been taking this to theextreme.Keeper Takaya Moritaki has been attempting to get the creature to eat for four years without success and cannot explain what the problem is.

"I just want it to eat something somehow," he says. "It"s weakened in this state." In a recent videotaped effort, Mr. Moritaki was seen giving the isopod some fish to eat but all it seemed to do was nibble at it before walking away. The giant isopod lives far away from our ball-point pens, over 100 meters under the sea. They are scavengers who have adapted to going for long periods of time withoutfood. However, when an ample food source is present, they can ravenous appetites sometimes even biting through underwater cables.

Scammers pretending to be spiritual healers have conned vulnerable people out of millions in New York. The scam typically involves members of the public being approached by individuals claiming to be spiritualists or fortune tellers. Details vary, but most frequently the victim is told that a loved one is possessed by an evil spirit or is going to die. To safeguard them, the con-artist requests valuables such as jewelry or money which they then "bless" and return to thevictim in an envelope with instructions not to open it for a set time period.

When the victim does finally open the envelope the valuables are missing - replaced instead with rocks or some other valueless object."They know the culture, they know how to talk to these victims to get them to listen," said New York police spokesman Paul Browne. "One person"s spirituality is another"s superstition, and they prey on that distinction." "Detectives say there has been a rash in New York of what"s known as an evil spirit orblessing scam, where older immigrant women, mostly Chinese, are swindled out of their valuables by clever scammers arriving from China who prey on superstition and fear."

Some of the first ever footage of a live, healthy oarfish has been released by researchers.Oarfish are particularly difficult to film because they live deep down in the depths of the ocean below 3,200ft. While the average length is around 10ft, some oarfish can grow up to 30ft or more with the largest specimen ever recorded measuring 36ft. The new footage was recorded as part of a project called SERPENT which was acollaboration between marine researchers and the oil and gas industries.Oarfish are a rather enigmatic species and not a lot is known about them.

Some specimens that have either been caught in nets or washed up dead on shorelines have lead to reports of "sea serpents" due to their giant size and snake-like appearance. One of the earliest recorded sightings occurred in 1808 when a large creature was said to have washed up on a shoreline in Scotland. "Scientistshave released what is believed to be the first ever good quality video of a healthy oarfish."

One of the wonders of the ancient world, the gardens may have not actually been in Babylon at all.For hundreds of the years the construction of the Hanging Gardens, a lavishly watered paradise, has been attributed to Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylonia. Despite extensive archaeological efforts to locate the site of the gardens however no trace of them has ever been found. A team from Germany spent 19 years excavating the most likely sites only to come up empty. "To their dismay, they could not find any possible location with enough space in thevicinity of the palaces, nor did they dig out any written confirmation from the many texts they unearthed," wrote researcher Stephanie Dalley.Instead, Dalley believes that the gardens may not have been located in Babylon at all but that they were in fact the creation of the Assyrians who built them more than 300 miles away at Ninevah which is located in today"s northern Iraq.

Dalley has based these conclusions on new cuneiform inscription translations and evidence of sophisticated aqueducts and canals in the region. "The Hanging Gardens of Babylon, one of the Seven Wonders of the AncientWorld, weren’t in Babylon at all – but were instead located 300 miles to the north in Babylon’s greatest rival Nineveh, according to a leading Oxford-based historian."
