Rare Cryptoids

An unusual animal with no hair and wrinkly skin has been shot and killed in Kentucky this month.Mark Cothren encountered the creature on December 18th. "I was like: "every animal has hair, especially this time of year!" What puzzled me is how something like thatcould survive through a winter with no hair," he said.

Has a mythical creature made its way to Kentucky? Some people seem to think so, after a Nelson County man came across a creature with grayish, wrinkly skin and no fur.

A series of photographs showing a strange creature in a Thailand village have appeared online.The jury is still out on what exactly this is however some UMers have suggested that it could be a cow fetus that the villagers believe to hold special powers. Let us know what you think in the commentsbelow.

A video showing what appears to be a unicorn running through the woods has been confirmed to be a hoax.The Ontario Science Centre in Toronto, Canada originally claimed they had received the video from a group of hunters however later confirmed that the video had actually been a fake. In an e-mail to UM member Sakari who was investigating the video a representative stated: "We chose to use a video of an alleged “unicorn sighting” to get the publicthinking about how myths persist even though we know they cannot be true.

These stories appeal to the human imagination. Unicorns are one of the many beasts featured in our upcoming exhibition, Mythic Creature: Dragons, Unicorns & Mermaids, which explores fossils, extinct creatures and animals that may have been the inspiration for some of these tales. Reaction to the video shows that even today, we are fascinated by myths." Footage of a unicorn runningthough a wood has been exposed as an elaborate hoax to promote an upcoming science exhibition.

Scientists may have solved the mystery of the goat-sucking chupacabra through evolution.Most recent chupacabra sightings have turned out to be coyotes with mange, scientists have contested that the condition may result in those animals attacking livestock in a way that has been up until now attributed to the legendary creature. Sincechupacabras are likely mangy coyotes, this explains why the creatures are often reported attacking livestock.

"Animals with mange are often quite debilitated," OConnor said. "And if they"re having a hard time catching their normal prey, they might choose livestock, because it"s easier. "
