A recent newspaper poll indicated that more than 50% did not believe that the event was a meteor.More than 1,200 people were injured in the meteor strike that caused large amounts of damage and shook a nation that hadn"t seen such an event since the Tunguska explosion of 1908. But was it really a meteor at all ? Some Russians believe that the explosion was actually from a secret US weapon test and the conspiracy theories don"t end there - some of the more creative explanations include a crashedalien spacecraft, a message from God and even an alien device aimed at unleashing a deadly virus on to the Earth."Our people remember the Soviet past, when news of disasters was concealed or lied about," said Alexei Grazhdankin who is director of an independent polling agency.

"A lot of our people just prefer not to accept the safe explanations they were taught at school. Even when all necessary information is available, they don"t want to believe it." They say that Russia is the motherland of conspiracy theories, and public reaction to thesudden meteor strike a week ago that stunned people in the Ural mountains, and injured more than 1,200, seems to be proving that true.

A man living near Groom Lake has allegedly filmed a test flight of a secret new aircraft design. The unnamed man is believed to live in a cabin in the mountains near to the site of the infamous military base Area 51 in Nevada. Pointing his camera skywards, he was able to capture the unusual looking aircraft as it flew overhead. The design seems unlike thatof any conventional jet and instead resembles something from a Batman movie ( hence being nicknamed "batplane" ).Opinions on-line have been mixed, some believe that the whole thing is a hoax or shows a movie prop while others subscribe to the idea that it could be a new type of secret aircraft being tested by the US military. A super secret airplane filmed over Area 51 in Nevada looks more likesomething out of a Batman movie than Jane"s Defense Weekly.

A secret organisation has been accepting large donations to undermine the science of global warming.According to The Independent newspaper, certain groups have been involved in funneling large amounts of money towards counteracting claims of climate change and global warming on behalf of anonymous billionaire donors with high stakes in fossil fuel industries.Sociologist Robert Brulle has estimated that more than $500 million hasbeen given to such organisations over the last ten years.

"We really have anonymous giving and unaccountable power being exercised here in the creation of the climate countermovement," he said. "There is no attribution, no responsibility for the actions of these foundations to the public." A secretive funding organisation in the United States that guarantees anonymity for its billionaire donors has emerged as a major operator in the climate "counter movement" to underminethe science of global warming, The Independent has learnt.

During the Cold War the United States considered lanching and detonating a nuclear bomb on the Moon. The plan was aimed at intimidating the Soviets by putting on a decisive display of America"s muscle. Tentatively named "A Study of Lunar Research Flights", the project would have seen a missile carrying a nuclear device being launched from an undetermined location and travelling 238,000 miles tothe moon where it would have impacted and exploded on the surface.

A young Carl Sagan ( who was only a graduate student at the time ) was involved in calculating the dust and gas generated by the explosion.Ultimately however the plan was scrapped, mainly due to the risks posed in the event of a failure and because there was concerns over contaminating the Moon with radioactive material. At the height of the space race, the U. S.considered detonating an atom bomb on the moon as a display of America"s Cold War muscle.
