Two mummified fetuses found in the tomb of King Tutankhamun will undergo DNA testing to determine their relation to the famous pharaoh, Egyptian officials announced today. The fetuses may also solve a longtime puzzle: the identity of King Tut"s mother. The young Tut, who reigned from 1336 to 1337 B.C., is controversially thought to be the son of Pharaoh Akhenaten and his wife Kiya. But some archaeologists believe he could be the son of Akhenaten"s otherwife, the powerful Queen Nefertiti.

"The fetuses will help us determine whether [King Tut"s wife and daughter of Nefertiti] Ankhesenamun was a half sister or a full sister," said Zahi Hawass, secretary general of Egypt"s Supreme Council of Antiquities. "If the fetus DNA matches King Tut"s DNA and Ankhesenamun["s DNA], then they shared the same mother." The testing will also reveal whether the fetuses are offspring of Ankhesenamun and Tut. Scientists caution, however, that they will probably not establish a direct link between the fetuses and Tut because suchgenetic matches are extremely difficult to prove. Additionally, mummies of fetuses found in a tomb are not necessarily the children of the buried pharaoh. "I personally feel they are not the sons of Tutankhamun," said Hawass, who is also a National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence.

A set of ancient funeral beads discovered in Egypt are made from materials found in a meteorite. The ancient Egyptians were no stranger to cosmology and now it turns out that even some of their jewellery was created out of materials from space. Archaeologists studying a set of nine iron funeral beads discovered in a 5000-year-old cemetery in 1911 believe that the beads themselves are made using metal recovered from ameteorite that crashed on to our planet in 3200BC.The discovery indicates that the ancient Egyptians were capable of far more advanced metalworking techniques than was previously thought.

"The results confirm that already in the fourth millennium BC metalworkers had mastered the smithing of meteoritic iron, an iron–nickel alloy much harder and more brittle than the more commonly worked copper," the study team wrote. "A set of funeral beads which could be theoldest iron artefacts on earth actually came from outer space, archaeologists have claimed."

Some of Egypt"s most important archaeological treasures are at risk of being stolen by grave robbers. The country"s recent political chaos has left many sites unprotected and in danger of being looted by opportunistic thieves. Some sites, undisturbed for thousands of years, are being excavated by amateurs who hope to cash in on timeless relics lying beneath thesands.

Authorities admit that there is little they can do to stop it and remain concerned that some of Egypt"s most valuable treasures could be lost forever."Antiquities theft is a very profitable business," said Professor Nur el-Din. "The government must make it a priority to stop the illegal excavations." "Egypt"s cultural heritage is in danger. Grave robbers, sometimes heavily armed, are takingadvantage of political chaos to plunder its poorly guarded archaeological sites."

An ancient statuette has been filmed on time lapse camera seemingly moving without outside help. The phenomenon was caught on a camera set up at Manchester Museum after staff kept finding the statuette facing the wrong way. The 25cm-tall artifact was brought to the museum 80 years ago after being discovered in an ancient Egyptian tomb. Some have attributed its peculiar movement to paranormal activity and ancient spirits while others, such asProfessor Brian Cox, believe the movement is caused simply by the vibrations of visitors walking past."I noticed one day that it had turned around," said Egyptologist Campbell Price.

"I put it back but then the next day it had moved again. We set up a time-lapse video and, although the naked eye can"t see it, you can clearly see it rotate on the film. The statuette is something that used to go in the tomb along with the mummy." "An ancient Egyptian statuette that slowly turnswithout any apparent outside help in a museum in Manchester, England, has locals spookily talking about the curse of the pharoahs."
