The 1600-year-old Temple of the Night Sun has been located deep within the Guatemalan jungle. The giant masks adorning the structure depict the sun god as he traverses the sky over the course of a day, with a shark-like appearance as the sun rises over the Caribbean in the east and the noonday sun depicted as an ancient being with crossed eyes. The temple would have once served as a beacon that would have beenvisible for miles around."We have images of the sun god at different stages ...

but we"ve never found anything that puts it all together," said Maya expert Simon Martin. "We"ve had to assemble [the sequence] from bits and pieces of information and just trust that we got it right. This could be an opportunity to see the whole thing stage by stage." Some 1,600 years ago, the Temple of the Night Sun was a blood-red beacon visible for miles and adorned with giantmasks of the Maya sun god as a shark, blood drinker, and jaguar.

Despite regular dry seasons the Maya found an ingenious way to store enough water to sustain them.Researchers believe that the Mayan civilization at Tikal in Guatemala survived for over a thousand years despite extensive droughts thanks to a sophisticated system of paved reservoirs that stored excess water during the wet season to sustain the populationwhen everything else had dried up."These people were able to use their land and water resources in a sustainable manner for as long as 1,500 years without significant interruption," said anthropologist Vernon Scarborough.

For four months out of every year in the ancient Mayan city of Tikal, the skies dried up and no rain fell. Nevertheless, this metropolis in what is now Guatemala became abustling hub of as many as 80,000 residents by A. D. 700.

The oldest ever Mayan calendar has been unearthed by archaeologists at the Xultun ruins in Guatemala. For years the fact that the Mayan calendar appears to end in 2012 has lead many people to believe that it marks a prediction for the end of the world. The new discovery however has helped to rule out that the Mayans ever intended to make such a prediction, instead their calendar system revolves around cycles that whencombined provide dates that stretch over 7,000 years in to the future."The ancient Maya predicted the world would continue, that 7,000 years from now, things would be exactly like this," said Dr.

William Saturno. "We keep looking for endings. The Maya were looking for a guarantee that nothing would change. It"s an entirely different mindset." Archaeologists working at the Xultun ruins of the Mayan civilisation have reported striking finds, including theoldest-known Mayan astronomical tables. The site, in Guatemala, includes the first known instance of Mayan art painted on the walls of a dwelling.

A number of artefacts have been discovered within the Pyramid of the Sun at Teotihuacan in Mexico.Making full use of existing tunnels excavated by archaeologists in the 1930s, researchers were able to unearth a host of new finds including a greenstone mask, projectile heads and small knives. It is thought that the 11cm mask might be a portrait ofsomeone due to its unusual size.

The offering also contained eleven Tlaloc vessels, (dedicated to the God of Rain) most of them broken, placed in the middle of the whole deposit. Further objects include three pyrite discs, one with a 45 cm diameter and mounted on a slate slab the largest ever recovered from Teotihuacan.
