British scientists are helping uncover the secrets of medicines used by the ancient Egyptians 5,000 years ago. A University of Manchester team is travelling to Sinai, Egypt, to shed more light on how the Egyptians formed their ideas on medicines. They will compare modern plant species in the region with those used by tribes, such as the Bedouin, and plant remains found in ancient tombs. The project is being carried out by the KNH Centre for Biomedical Egyptology. Researcher Dr Ryan Metcalf told BBC News: "Ancient Egyptians' medicine was remarkably advanced for its time. A lot of things they used we still use today."They certainly had some quite advanced herbal medicines and probably knew about cannabis as well for pain relief." Dr Metcalf said the Egyptians used natural remedies, such as chewing willow bark - which contains properties similar to aspirin - and honey on open wounds to kill bacteria.

The focus of the project will be trying to find out where they got their ideas from. "We know that the ancient Egyptians had extensive trade routes and it is entirely possible that both medicinal plants and the knowledge to use them effectively were traded between regions and countries," Dr Metcalf said. "By comparing the prescriptions in the medical papyri to the medicinal plant use of the indigenous Bedouin people we hope todetermine the origins of Pharaonic medicine." Papyri, the forerunner of modern paper, is sheets of laminated material made from thin strips of the Cyprus Papyrus plant. Researchers will work with the Egyptian Medicinal Plant Conservation Project in St Katherine's, Sinai, which is working to preserve the biodiversity of the region through co-operation with local Bedouin. They will be able to supply the Manchester team with seeds and information that covers the Sinai peninsula.

Is it really possible that the Ancient Indians had the capacity to deploy devastating nuclear weapons against their enemies? Moreover is it really possible, as many Ufologists claim, that awesomely powerful nuclear weapons were actually given to the ancient Indian warriors by extraterrestrials, highly advanced spacemen from other planets? well passages from ancient Indian national epics certainly Appear to be evidence of such astonishing claims.

It is in ancient Indian epic poems such as such The Mahabarata and The Ramayana that we can read what appear to be references to an otherwise relatively primitive people having the capacity to wield highly destructive nuclear weapons. Not surprisingly it is as a direct consequence of such compelling passages that many Ufologists like Erich Von Daniken and W. R. Drake (See for I.E. According to The Evidence – Souvenir, 1977 and Gods & Spacemen In The Ancient East - Sphere, 1976 ), have argued that the highly advanced capacity to use (and misuse) nuclear weaponry must have being handed down to these ancient people by the Gods or, in other words, highly-advanced extra-terrestrial spacemen. How else, these proponents of ancient astronauts say, could such an ancient people manage to develop the extremely advanced technological status necessary to make such complex and destructive weaponry that could ‘scorch the universe’ and make ‘inauspicious winds’ blow? Surely even the crude but ultimately terribly destructive nuclear device dropped on Hiroshima demanded an highly advanced science to develop and deliver it, they say. Reading through the various passages of The Ramayana and The Mahabarata with an eye to references of destructive nuclear type weapons certainly does lend itself to believing such claims, too. The evidence does appear to be highly compelling. For instance on p.383 of the Drona Parva we come across the following lines which certainly could be construed as evidence of the loathsome effects of detonating a nuclear weapon of some sorts...

A retired navy man's musings on riding a backyard swing as a young boy gave him the idea for an invention that he says can explain one of histories enduring mysteries - the construction of the great pyramids of Egypt. James Murphy said his Apex Delivery and Lifting System - or Murphy Mover - is more than just an explanation. It's a nearly energy free way of lifting and moving large objects. It doesn't take much power and doesn't need any major outside energy - just gravity. The problem is getting it publicized. He's built small versions of the Murphy Mover, but would like to get a grant to get the funding tobuild and operate a large scale one.“If you have the most valuable nickel in the world, and if nobody knows about it, it's just worth a nickel” he said. That's the hold up for Murphy's invention, which he has demonstrated and shown to several experts. While no one calls it an unqualified success, no one has laughed it off either. They do want to see some more proof. So does Murphy. He's trying to get a scientific paper on the Murphy Mover published to attract the attention that could lead to a grant to demonstrate his theory and models.Murphy is looking for someone with an engineering or technical background to help him write an article for publication in a robotics magazine.Murphy came across his idea reminiscing about ridinghis swing set as a young boy.

As he swung higher and higher, the swing set started moving -- frightening to a young boy, but a revelation to an inventor.“I would swing so high that the back legs would come off the ground, then the front legs would come off the ground.”Years later, as he looked back on it, he realized what was happening - gravity acting on his weight made the swing set walk.He mused on that thought and ended up with his invention, the Murphy Mover.

A computer in antiquity would seem to be an anachronism, like Athena ordering takeout on her cellphone. But a century ago, pieces of a strange mechanism with bronze gears and dials were recovered from an ancient shipwreck off the coast of Greece. Historians of science concluded that this was an instrument that calculated and illustrated astronomical information, particularly phases of the Moon and planetary motions, in the second century B.C.The Antikythera Mechanism, sometimes calledthe world’s first computer, has now been examined with the latest in high-resolution imaging systems and three-dimensional X-ray tomography.

A team of British, Greek and American researchers was able to decipher many inscriptions and reconstruct the gear functions, revealing, they said, “an unexpected degree of technical sophistication for the period.”The researchers, led by Tony Freeth and Mike G. Edmunds, both of the University of Cardiff, Wales, are reporting the results of their study in Thursday’s issue of the journal Nature. They said their findings showed that the inscriptions related tolunar-solar motions and the gears were a mechanical representation of the irregularities of the Moon’s orbital course across the sky, as theorized by the astronomer Hipparchos. They established the date of the mechanism at 150-100 B.C.
