An american woman who levitated, demonstrated paranormal psychic powers and spoke foreign languages unknown to her was clearly demon possessed, according to a board-certified psychiatrist and associate professor of clinical psychiatry at New York Medical College. The unnamed woman, with a long history of involvement with Satanic groups, was observed by a team of priests, deacons, several lay assistants, psychiatrists, nuns, some of whom also had medical and psychiatrictraining, levitating six inches off the ground while objects flew off shelves in the same room, according to Dr.

Richard E. Gallagher, who documented the case in the February issue of the New Oxford Review. "Periodically, in our presence, Julia would go into a trance state of a recurring nature," writes Gallagher. "Mentally troubled individuals often "dissociate," but Julia"s trances were accompanied by an unusual phenomenon: Out of her mouth would come various threats, taunts and scatological language, phrases like "Leave her alone, you idiot," "She"s ours," "Leave, you imbecilepriest," or just "Leave." The tone of this voice differed markedly from Julia"s own, and it varied, sometimes sounding guttural and vaguely masculine, at other points high pitched. Most of her comments during these "trances," or at the subsequent exorcisms, displayed a marked contempt for anything religious or sacred."

The Smurls Family

Madonna’s “Papa Don’t Preach” was the No. 1 song in America in August 1986. Tina Turner’s star was unveiled in Hollywood, too. And Jack and Janet Smurl, then of West Pittston, told the world a demon was haunting their Chase Street home for nearly 18 months. The Smurl family, Jack and Janet and their four daughters, lived on one side of the double-block home at 330 Chase St., while Jack’s parents, John and Mary, occupied the other side. The Smurls claimed that their 75-pound German shepherd was slammed into a wall by the demon; that it had bitten Jack’s ear and shakenthe couple’s mattress.

They even said the spirit threw one of their daughters down a flight of stairs. But it didn’t stop there. The family said they heard blood-curdling screams at all hours of the night, pig grunts and smelled a horrible stench. Jack said the demon once dragged him on his knees while he said the rosary and tried to beat him into submission and that he had been sexually assaulted by the demon on several occasions.

“Demon is in that home” The family called in Edward Warren, the director of the New England Society for Psychic Research, and his wife, Lorraine, to investigate in January 1986. According to Warren and his team of investigators, there was a very powerful demon in the home, whichhad gotten progressively stronger through the years. “The Smurls are truly a family coming under a visual attack,” Warren said. “The ghost, devil, demon – or whatever you call it – is in that home.” After months of investigation, Warren claimed he had audiotapes of knocking, rapping and dark shadows that belonged to the demon. “We’re dealing with an intelligence here,” he said in an article that appeared in The Times Leader in August 1986. “It’s powerful, intangible and very dangerous.” Warren, who seemed to be the only person who believed the Smurls at the time, said the first night he was at the home he used the name of Jesus Christ and a crucifix, holy water and holy oil. “I did not have to wait moments whent......

Charles Darwin

More Americans believe in the existence of hell and the devil than Darwin’s theory of evolution, according to a nationwide poll. Nearly two-thirds (62 per cent) of US residents polled said they believed in a literal hell and the devil, 60 per cent said they believed in the virgin birth.Only 42 per cent of those surveyed, however, said they believed in Darwin’s theory of evolution, or “natural selection”. The results reflect the deep divide in American society between those who believe in Darwin’s theory and those who favour creationism or intelligent design, the idea that life is too complex to have evolved by chance and must be the work of a divine being. Some39 per cent of respondents said they believed in creationism. While the scientific community dismisses the theory of intelligent design, proponents have fought for it to be taught alongside evolution in schools.

Broken down by religion, the survey found that only 16 per cent of born-again Christians (or evangelicals) compared to 43 per cent of Catholics and 30 per cent of Protestants believed in Darwin’s theory. Meanwhile, 60 per cent of born-again Christians, but only 43 per cent of Catholics, believed in creationism. Overall, the poll reflects the centrality of faith to American life, politics and culture, with 82 per cent saying they believed in God. Three quarters agreed there is a heaven while 72 per cent believed Jesus is God or the Son of God and 79 per cent believed in miracles. The question of faith is proving a key issue in campaigning for next year’spresidential election. For example, in a new advert, Mick Huckabee, the Republican presidential hopeful and Baptist minister, declares: “Faith doesn’t just influence me, it really defines me.” The poll, by market researchers Harris, involved 2,455 US adults from across the country selected to reflect the national population in terms of age, sex, race, education and household income. It also found that significant minorities of Americas believe in ghosts (41 per cent), UFOs (35 per cent), witches (31 per cent), astrology (29 per cent) and reincarnation (21 per cent). Born-again Christians were more likely to believe in witches (37 per cent) while Catholics were found more likely to believe in astrology and re-incarnation.

Codex Gigas, also known as the Devil"s Bible — a medieval manuscript said to have been written 800 years ago with the devil"s help — has returned to Prague after an absence of 359 years. And Czechs were eager to see it, officials said Friday. The priceless piece, considered the biggest medieval book, was taken from the Prague Castle by Swedish troops at the end of the Thirty Years" War in 1648. It is in Prague on loan from Sweden"s Royal Library in Stockholm. It was put on display under high security at the CzechNational Library.

Its return to Prague for Sept 20 — Jan 6 exhibition was made possible after years of negotiations between Czech and Swedish diplomats, National Library spokeswoman Katerina Novakova said. "We expected big interest from the public," Novakova said. "Now, we are 100% full." Only 60 people per hour can enter an air-conditioned room in the library"s medieval complex in downtown Prague for a 10-minutes look at the manuscript, which is inside a specially designed, unbreakable case, she said. According to myth, a Benedictine monk promised to write the book overnight to atone for his sins. When he realized the task wasimpossible, he asked the devil for help. The page with the illustration of the devil the one visitors see. The manuscript was likely written by one monk from the Benedictine monastery in Podlazice located some 100 kilometers (65 miles) east of Prague sometime at the beginning of the 13th century, said Zdenek Uhlir, a specialist on medieval manuscripts at the National Library.
