Margaret Thatcher was one of two great British Prime Ministers in the 20th century (Sir Winston Churchill was the other). Unlike Churchill, whose greatness rests with one particular achievement (victory in the Second World War), Thatcher was a truly transformational figure. Driven by a clearly defined political program that informed virtually all of her policy decisions, she changed first the Conservative Party, and then British society. This political program became known as Thatcherism, and her followers as Thatcherites. Thatcherism and the Thatcherites survived her fall from power in1990, and continue to dominate the British Conservative party to this day, even as they languish in opposition (more about that in a moment).Ufology has its own Thatcherism.
It is embodied not in a single person, but rather a single case.Call it “Roswellism.”Like Thatcher’s impact on British politics and society, Roswell changed Ufology forever, both internally, and in its relationship with the mainstream. Not the actual “incident,” of course, which was ignored for three decades, but the “Case,” as studied and debated since its re-discovery by Stan Friedman in the late 1970s.What is Roswellism? In broad strokes, it is:1. The unequivocal acceptance of the Extraterrestrial Hypothesis (ie. UFOs arealien spacecraft) as true;2. The unequivocal acceptance that alien spacecraft crash landed near Roswell in 1947 (and the resulting acceptance that any other crashed flying saucer story may be true); and3. The unequivocal acceptance that the American government has covered up the truth about 1 and 2 since 1947, in an organized “conspiracy of silence” that represents a “Cosmic Watergate."
In 1986, on his death bed, retired Major Jesse Marcel told his son; "You must tell the world the truth about Roswell. When the military no longer has a hold over you and your family, please set the record straight!"Major Jesse Marcel was the head of intelligence at an Army Air Field located at Roswell, [New Mexico]. On July 7, 1947 Major Marcel was sent to inspect what was being reported as the crash of an unidentified object on a ranch seventy-five miles northwest of the base. After inspecting the crash site, Marcel stopped by his home to show his family what he had discovered. Jesse Jr. was only eleven years old at the time, but vividlyremembers his father's excitement, and seeing and handling a foil-like material that his father said was scattered around the wreckage.
It was shiny and paper thin, but could not be torn or cut. It also retained a memory, mysteriously unfolding each time his father tried to fold it. And then there was that beam of metal several feet long, which was covered with hieroglyphic-type writing and markings. It was indeed something that was not of this world.Upon return to his Air base, Major Marcel's superior officer, Col. William "Butch" Blanchard, ordered him to fly the material to Wright Patterson Air Base in Akron, OH, first stopping in Fort Worth, TX to show the strange findings to Gen. Roger Ramey,,the head of the Eighth Air Force. When Ramey learned thatBlanchard had issued a press release stating they had recovered a "flying disc," and that it was being flown to Wright-Pat, Ramey was livid, and immediately called a press conference. Marcel would be photographed (see photo right) holding remnants of a weather balloon, and was forced to tell the media that these were his only findings at Roswell. From that time on, and despite dozens of collaborating witnesses at the crash site, Major Marcel was forced to live with that lie the rest of his life.
This is the second in a special series of Raiders News Network interviews focusing on the 60th Anniversary of the 1947 Roswell, New Mexico UFO Incident. Tom Horn is joined by Col. Jesse Marcel Jr., whose highly anticipated new book "The Roswell Legacy," is being released at the Roswell Festival this year. Col. Marcel's book claims that the famous UFO event near the city actually occurred, including the recovery of an extraterrestrial craft. Col. Marcel's father, Maj. Jesse Marcel Sr. was the lead military investigator into the crash of 1947 and is finally vindicated according to this book. Horn: Col. Marcel, it is so good to speak with you again. Thank you for taking time to talk to usabout Roswell and your new book.
You will be speaking and on some panels at Roswell this year. One question or correction. I note in the past we had the title of your book as "Roswell: It Really Happened", but I see it advertised elsewhere now as "The Roswell Legacy". Has the book title been changed? Marcel: The book has evolved with time. As I was writing it, I realized that Legacy was more appropriate than what really happened. The title of the book is "The Roswell Legacy." Horn: This is the 60th anniversary. Does it feel that long ago to you? Marcel: It is hard to believe that 60 years have passed on the calendar. It seems like yesterday to me to use a cliché'.Horn: As the only man alive who the government admits handled material from the debris field in 1947, material your dadlet you and your mother see as he stopped off at home on his way back to the base, how did that night effect you. It changed the course of UFOlogy and put Roswell and your family on the map.Marcel: It was then that I realized that our civilization was not alone certainly in the galaxy and that we were in fact being visited by others more advanced because they could get here from where ever they come from. I took it to mean that we were being studied from a scientifically curious race just as we would be curious about other life forms on our planet.
Still the debate goes on about Roswell – the most famous incident in UFO history. Is there anything more to be said about the alleged recovery in 1947 of a crashed space craft and occupants in New Mexico? Well, yes, there is – and a Leeds audience will be the ones to hear it.An Italian researcher called Maurizio Baiata will reveal secrets to the Great British UFO Show in Headingley next month. He is one of nine speakers brought together by UFO DATA magazine, published from an office in Kippax, east Leeds.Editor Russell Callaghan, a deputy Post Office manager in his other life, said: "Something happened at Roswell and it has been very wellcleansed over the years."The US military has changed its story three times as people have come forward with new information."I think people are going to be surprised by Maurizio's lecture and his new information about Col Philip J Corso who wrote a book in 1996 called The Day After Roswell.
"In this he claimed that inventions like integrated circuits and fibre optics were developed from what was found after the crash at Roswell."Maurizio was the first man to interview him before the publication of his book and he wrote notes in his diaries. He is bringing them with him and will share them with the people of Leeds."The big stuff about Roswell is out in the open but some of the smaller stuff is interesting as well."Awell-known UFO sceptic, Andy Roberts, hjas been lined up to talk about his investigations into so-called "foo fighters" – mysterious craft which buzzed both Allied and Axis aircraft during the Second World War."His conclusion is that the origin of the foo fighters is unknown," said Russell. "There is no evidence that they were secret German weapons. In fact, there is more evidence to suggest they were UFOs than that they were Nazi craft."
