Tampa International Airport shuts down temporarily so workers can perform maintenance.TIA"s main runway will be closed until the 13th to accommodate changes that have arisen from the slow creep of Earth"s Magnetic North. Workers will be required to repaintseveral indicators and replace many others to make up for the 40 mile-per-year shift of the pole toward Russia.
Maintenance on the airport"s other two runways will proceed later this month. The Federal Aviation Administration required the runway designation change to account for what a National Geographic News report described as a gradual shift of the Earth"s magnetic pole at nearly 40 miles a year toward Russia because ofmagnetic changes in the core of the planet.
Submitted by Sharm: Earth might have spun on its side to keep its balance in the distant past, and could do so again, scientists reported today. Alaska was suddenly at the equator, the thinking goes. Scientists already know that the North Pole wanders over time. But a theory known as true polar wander suggests that if a very heavy object, like an oversized volcano forms far from the equator, the force of the planet'srotation would pull the object away from the axis the Earth spins around.
Should a mass such as the very heavy volcano become unbalanced, Earth would tilt and rotate itself until the extra weight moves somewhere near the equator.Analyzed samples of ancient sediments found in the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard show that such an event may have indeed happened in the past. "The sediments we have recovered from Norway offer the first good evidence that a true polar wander event happened about 800 million years ago," said AdamMaloof, an assistant professor of geosciences at Princeton University. "If we can find good corroborating evidence from other parts of the world as well, we will have a very good idea that our planet is capable of this sort of dramatic change."
It began as a search for
Atlantis. But Charles Hapgood's discovery of our shifting planet is perhaps more
profound. If his data is correct, we've got to face some unsettling facts about
our Earth's past and-- and more importantly-- our future.
The "Shifting Poles Theory"
was introduced by History Professor, Charles H. Hapgood, whose
fascination with geography and ancient maps led to his re-discovery of the Piri
Reis Map. This hand drawn Turkish naval map had been gathering dust since the
early 1500's, its significance unrealized. On closer scrutiny, Hapgood observed
evidence of spherical trigonometry and a detailed knowledge of global
geography-- including the coastline of Antarctica at a remote time, when it was
free of ice. The map had been drawn just a few years after Columbus visited the
Americas. The cartographer, Admiral Piri Reis, described his world map as having
been drawn from "very old" reference maps. It appeared as if some ancient,
forgotten civilization had risen to these capabilities, and then had
disappeared. The identity of these ancient mariners begged to be discovered.
The most obvious place to look
for such an old, yet advanced, civilization was in the famous accounts of the
lost continent, Atlantis, described in somewhat vague, but realistic,
commentary by the Greek historian, Plato. Captain Jacques Cousteau concluded
that Plato's Atlantis was in the Mediterranean, near Greece. His underwater
explorations found evidence of extensive maritime trading and skilled boat
building, along with some artifacts dated to thousands of years B.C. But no vast
metropolis was found. Scholars called attention to the utopian descriptions of
Plato, who hinted that Atlantis was in the "ocean" and "beyond the pillars of
Hercules," known today as the Straight of Gibraltar. And so tradition eventually
placed Atlantis somewhere on the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean.
With the invention of deep
submersibles, the bottom of the North and South Atlantic have been mapped and
their topography is now well known. The history of these oceanic floors is
preserved in a succession of lava flows associated with the movement of tectonic
plates. In other words, we're pretty sure that there is no sunken continent on
these ocean floors. The same mapping has revealed recent changes in the
habitable areas along the oceanic coastlines. Stone structures and a pyramid lie
just off the coast of Bimany. Submerged forests have recently been found off the
coastline of America's Northwest. Petroglyphs in Hawaii, carved into stone, are
now covered by meters of the Pacific Ocean-- evidence of a lower ocean level. So
while there is yet no sunken Atlantis, there does appear to be evidence of some
dramatic changes to both the ocean levels and climates in our planet's recent
history.
Seeing the powerful earthquakes such as the December 26th, 2004 event that triggered the tsunami disaster, people are looking for possible causes for the apparent instability of earth's crust. "End-times" alarmists and backyard researchers believe that the predicted imminent reversal of the earth's magnetic field may be a significant clue to these eschatological-scale events.Scientists have been observing changes in the direction of earth's magnetic field which took place recently as well as in the distant past. NASA’s website features a map showing the gradual northward migration of the north magnetic pole in the past century and a half. Since more than double the timeinterval has elapsed since the last reversal, compared to the time lapse between the previous two pole reversals, some believe we may be overdue for the next north-south flip.
(1,2) However, though the interval between reversals of the Earth’s magnetic field can be as short as 5,000 years, it can also be as long as 50 million years. There does not seem to be any logic or rule governing the planet’s behavior. It is not only the direction but also the strength of this magnetic field that is a concern. In the time of dinosaurs, at an estimated 2.5 gauss, it was eighty percent stronger than it is now. This may have been one of the reasons such gigantic life forms thrived. It is now accepted that a catastrophic event ended the reign of giant reptiles. However, they did not re-evolve to equivalent dimensions. Andthe disappearance of mammalian “mega-fauna” in more recent times is still considered to be a mystery. The mastodons and mammoths would have towered over modern elephants. Why are there so few large terrestrial animals today? The smaller average size of modern animals may be due to the gradual decline of Earth's "steady state" (as opposed to “pulsed”) magnetism. Thousands of years ago the Chinese, with their astute discovery of bio-electrical energy flows known as “meridians”, learned that magnetism promotes vigor in biological life. They used magnetic rocks in medical treatment. In the past century there has been a further decline of earth's magnetic field by another five percent down to only 0.5 gauss. This has led Dr. Dean Bonlie to identify a "magnetic deficiency syndrome"resulting from ...
