Today we bring you an in depth interview with TAPS member Kristyn Gartland.
She has so kindly taken time out of her busy schedule to talk to us about things
that go bump in the night. She shares with us some tips on investigating, and
some of the paranormal experiences she has encountered. A wonderfully delightful
person with a spooky tale to tell. I hope readers take as much away from this
interview as I did, as it is invaluable information, that could possibly save a
potential investigator, or anyone who is interested in the paranormal a world of
grief.
Tracey: Kristen how would you describe your position at TAPS?
Kristyn: It keeps me pretty busy. I get to talk to people all the way from
California to Florida. I figure out which cases would be best to work on. I
forward them to TAPS family groups. I take on the cases in our area, answer
emails. Wow now that I look at that I do a lot. Hahahah!
Tracey: So you would say you're the case manager
Kristyn: Yes I actually got that position when Donna left a few months back.
Tracey: Have you conducted field research as well?
Kristyn: Yes I have conducted field research; I will still conduct field
research. Prior to case manager I was the case coordinator.
Tracey: How long have you been with TAPS?
Kristyn: I've been with Taps roughly five years
Tracey: Kristyn I noted that you do a lot of traveling to meet and greet fans as
well as investigate. Do you have a strong support system? How does your family
handle it?
Kristyn: Oh yes definitely! I have a huge support system. My boyfriend is
nothing less than amazing and my son is wonderful! I am very lucky to have the
support that I do. When I get the chance to travel, I always have that feeling
like I am going to miss something with my family, but they are good about it, my
son sometimes isn't...but he knows I love it! And he tells all his friends, "ya
well my mom is on T.V." It's so funny.
Tracey: That is awesome!
Tracey: Kristyn, when you go on an investigation, what equipment do you prefer
to use?
Kristyn: Ahhh well, analog recorders, I like a lot more with tapes than digital.
High 8 or mini DVD, no preference there. Regular EMF meter, nothing fancy
although it's nice to have DVR and infrared cams.
Tracey: Excellent choices!
Tracey: If you were to go on an investigation, and conduct some EVPs, what are
some of the kinds of questions or statements you would ask to get a response?
Kristyn: I do the mainstream kind, for example what is your name? How old are
you? Why are you here? Show me a sign. Typical questions unless other more
specific information about the haunting is available, then I can ask more
questions related to that haunting.
Tracey: I noticed while the show progressed, that TAPS started a technique
similar to provocation. I.e. saying things to the alleged spirit that might
irritate it into action. Have you or the team noticed any notable difference
using this technique?
Kristyn: Yep we have been using this technique. I haven't noticed any
significant difference in general, but it also depends on each individual
haunting. When I investigate I tend to be a magnet for evp's, so when I get the
chance I talk a lot.
Tracey: Was there a particular incident or incidents that sparked your interest
in the paranormal field? If so, could you share with our readers a bit about
that?
Kristyn: I made the mistake of using a Ouija board and in doing so I allowed an
inhuman in and it wreaked havoc on my house and everyone in it. There was
banging, screaming, doors slamming shut, walls shaking. You name it I had it.
I felt as if I had no one to turn to and no one to tell with out being strapped
down in a hospital. My son was terrorized. I wouldn't allow him to be alone in
the house; he slept in my bed every night. I began to sleep only during the day.
It was the scariest time in my life. I had this little boy to protect against
something I could not stop or even see to try to stop.
Thank god for TAPS! Jason totally came to the rescue. Keith Johnson, who is our
demonologist, was another person who I am thankful for!! They both were the
support I needed.
Tracey: That is incredible! How did you finally rid your life of the inhuman?
Kristyn: After several times trying, I was finally able to get through to Jason
by email. The times I had tried to get through to them before, the spirit had
interfered. Jason called me and I was hysterical on the phone, I was basically
saying "omg I'm not crazy! This is really happening to me!" Jason agreed to get
the team together and came to my home to investigate.
I am pretty sure that they thought I was going to be a young girl in hysterics
when they arrived, but that all changed when they started witnessing things
happen as well. That is when they realized they needed to call Keith in.
Keith came and blessed everything in my house, and it still wouldn't go away. It
would bang outside my house because it could not come in. It would chase me up
the stairs. I was back to being petrified!
Later I called them again because the blessing did not work to its potential. It
was letting me know that it wasn't happy and wasn't going away with out a fight.
Well my fight was Keith and TAPS, and we won in the end.
I will never ever get over that. I know people reading always say "ya sure that
happened" and I wouldn't have believed it myself if I did not see it with my own
eyes. Keith still has the evp's from my house!
Tracey: It always amazes me when I hear of an intelligent haunting such as this!
Tracey: Kristyn can you explain a little bit to our readers about what an
Inhuman is? Also perhaps what category it falls under i.e. demon, poltergeist
etc...
Kristyn: An inhuman, is a spirit that never walked the earth unlike you or I.
Much of what is known is it was one of the fallen angels. There are many demonic
spirits out there. Keith is the expert; I was just the test subject. It is
something of an evil nature. From what I have learned and seen first hand it is
not something to recon with... Unless your Keith of course!
Tracey: On April 21st a project started by Jason and Grant called Beyond Reality
Radio stepped into the audio arena. Do you play a roll in that project?
Kristyn: I do not.
Tracey: Did you know there is an independent pole on the net to get more air
time for you on Ghost Hunters? How do you feel about that?
Kristyn: Ha ha yes! I just found out about that recently. I am flattered, and
honored. I think it's totally awesome that I am being recognized.
Tracey: Agreed! I added my name to the list as well lol
Tracey: Tell us a little bit about everyday Kristyn, what do you do to relax;
what are some of your hobbies?
Kristyn: I rarely have time but when I get a chance I absolutely love to go
horseback riding and investigating of course.
Tracey: Kristyn, can you recall the funniest moment you can think of on an
investigation?
Kristyn: Actually I would have to say at my own house. We were trying to get
some EVP. It seemed that any time that someone would ask "does anyone have
anything to say?" OR "Is anyone here?" My stomach would start growling and I
mean loud! The whole room laughed. Now it's an ongoing joke! That and my ass
print from Louisiana.
Tracey: lol
Tracey: What would you say was the scariest time for you on an investigation?
Kristyn: I would also have to say my house again, because that would definitely
be when I was dealing with the inhuman.
Tracey: I can only imagine!
Tracey: As a field researcher with TAPS, do you have a favorite investigation
that you attended?
Kristyn: I would have to say Waverly Hills in Kentucky! That place was amazing.
Myrtles Plantation is close for 1st place though.
Tracey: Do you think folks who go looking for activity will encounter the
paranormal more than folks that aren't out looking for anything to happen?
Kristyn: I think it's just the opposite. People searching always say they never
find anything and those who aren't, cannot get away from them.
Tracey: Can you tell our readers a little bit about Paranormal 101?
Kristyn: Sure! Paranormal 101 is a class covering the basics of investigating. I
will tell you what to do before the investigation, what to bring when conducting
an investigation, what to do while your there, what might occur during an
investigation and how to be prepared for it. Also tips on what to do afterwards.
Tracey: So essentially you cover the whole process of before during and after
the investigations? That is great! I am sure this will be very helpful to many
people.
Tracey: On a podcast with Spooky South Coast, it was briefly mentioned that the
paranormal activity is rather strong in the New England area, of which you
tended to agree. Can you tell me your opinion on why you think paranormal
activity is fairly strong in the New England area?
Kristyn: I don't know. All of the sudden I am getting a lot of emails from the
Massachusetts area. Perhaps it is that people see we cover the Massachusetts
area, but also I feel like people are more likely to report something and ask
for help today as where in the past it would not be so easy to do.
Tracey: I noticed a very cool advert on your Myspace page a movie entitled Death
Walks the Streets Do you have any involvement in that project?
Kristyn: No I did not, but I wish I did.
Tracey: What advice would you give to someone that wants to become a paranormal
investigator and is just starting out?
Kristyn: I would say read as much as humanly possible. Take the time to research
and read before you delve into a paranormal field. If you don't have experience,
talk to people who do.
I think one of the things people should have readily available is a medication
dictionary. If someone were to call in to report activity, one of the things I
ask them is if they are on medication. Different medications or combinations of
meds can cause hallucinations which make it very difficult to investigate a case
legitimately for that person.
Tracey: Kristyn do you think that animals are more sensitive to the paranormal
that humans?
Kristyn: I think they can be. I think it depends on the animal just as much as
it depends on the person. Dogs I used to have, were very in tune with the
surrounding environment, but the dog I have now, doesn't have a clue.
A friend of mine once said, that if an animal comes into the home, that already
has a spirit attached, the animal might not react simply because they think the
spirit is a natural part of the household. If the spirit arrives after the
animal i.e. followed you home from an investigation; that the animal might be
more likely to sense that something is out of place.
Tracey: That is very interesting indeed!
Tracey: Do you think that children can be more sensitive to the paranormal that
adults?
Kristyn: Definitely. I think that they haven't been told that there is no such
thing as ghosts, or that there is nothing under their beds or in their closets.
They are still innocent when they are young and untainted from society. So they
aren't as affected by it. My son used to talk to my grandmother on a regular
basis.
Tracey: What is your opinion on psychics?
Kristyn: I think with me, I would have to see validation. I guess their okay as
long as they aren't trying to take people for their money which we have all seen
to be true. I do know that there are some pretty talented people out there. We
just do not use them as evidence.
Tracey: If someone wanted to learn more about Kristyn Gartland and what she is
doing, where would they go?
Kristyn: Myspace, I know pathetic. For the most part I am very guarded. I don't
let my personal life out there. I am very private about my life and those around
me. I just feel that its my business and I will keep it that way. People have a
tendency to tell others too much, not me, you need a crowbar! All my paranormal
experiences I will tell anyone not even blinking an eye. Lol ask me my weight
and it's on! Ha ha ha
Tracey: I would like to say that I recently read on the Sci-Fi channel that
Season 4 (2008) has been confirmed, and there will be 6 new episodes to end
season 3 as well. Congratulations to the whole team! That is great!
Kristyn: Thank you so much! I am so proud to be a part of this group!

Kristyn: No, thank you for taking the time to talk to me! I enjoyed meeting you
